I installed Win 2k yesterday. It was working fine untill i wanted to shutdown when i clicked log off instead of shut down, the screen had the gray blur over it (like normal) but it just sat there i left clicked and it went back into windows and i could run progams fine. So i whet to shutdown makeing sure i clicked in the righ places selected shutdown from the dropdown menu and clicked OK and te machine just hung like it did before, but this time i couldnt get out of it so i hit my pcs reset button expecting scandisk to run on boot up, but it didnt, the pc got to the part where the login screen should be displaed but the pc rebooted, and it just carried on like this in a loop (Windows loads, pc reboots ... windows loads pc reboots ... and so on). I have tried every option on the menu you can get pressing f8 when windows starts to load but they all do the same, i ran the repair functions on the win 2k cd (all of them and ran all the commands begining with fix in the console repair mode). What should i do? (the HD uses NTFS)

First, I use Windows 2000; but, I am still on the low end of the beginning of the learning curve.

Now that I have made that disclaimer, I will suggest you choose the other repair mode. I forgot what it is called but there is only one other than the Console selection. Tell it to do all repair functions.

    I hope this helps.

By the way, I have never harmed a machine using this method.

Definitely try the repair option first...there is a management console option or manual (don't worry). Just make sure you dont change file structure (says something like, leave intact) so you dont wipe out profiles...desktop items, etc.

Also, when installing W2K on a cpu you might want to always make sure you have the absolute latest BIOS for the machine.
Everytime I've seen that loop, it's been because of the BIOS.

Once it's upgraded, make sure you check/uncheck the PlugnPlay OS, if it still loops........

And for future reference, Win2K does not automatically run chkdsk (it's version of scan disk) every time you power down the PC without doing the normal shutdown.

It will auto-run chkdsk if it has detected any problems but it doesn't always see them.

Have you tried selecting the [VGA mode] at startup? It is sorta like safe mode on non-NT systems and might start OK. If it does, do a start~run~cmd and when you get the DOS window, put in chkdsk /r and reboot.
