I am working with a Win 2k machine that is on a local network(no outside connection to web through network) and is dialing up to a local isp.

It connets to the isp just fine, but when opening a web browser it will not open any sites, returns message 'unable to open search page' or something very similar.

I have attempted to move by ip and it worked, multiply sites including isp site loaded by ip. I could also ping the isp, and the tech could ping the ip the win 2k machine was on.

It appeared to be a DNS issue, but suppling the DNS did nothing.

There are other machines in the same place as the win2k that are working currently, including at least one more 2k machine.

My question is basically, is there anyting else that might be tried?
Or might additional information be needed to provide help.

    Thanks for any help

    Did it ever work properly?

Have you verified that all the dial-up related setting are the same as on other systems that do work?

    And would you clarify
because I don't think I know what you meant.

Yes it did work properly in the past, it was unknown what the user 'did' to cause it to stop working, if anything.

"suppling the dns ", in the connection I specified the dns numbers instead of leaving it to server assigned.

I thank you for reply and sorry if my post wasn't totaly coherent.

Just to let you know, the problem has been fixed. Under Admin tools in the control panel, DNS client was restarted (even though it was currently running), reopened the Internet Explorer and the problem was gone.

If I might pose a seperate but related question then. Why would restarting the DNS client there affect it at all if the computer was not set up to be a server and is this something that occurs more often or was it a random occurence?

Thanks again for the reply and for any additional help.

See if this snip from a longer article rings a bell. Full article is Here

If you had bad cache data, it would probably flush when you reset DNS client and would then draw good records from the DNS server.
