I need help getting into safe mode. I go thru the process of getting there but I am stuck on the screen that asks for an account password. What account do they want? It does not accept my MS Live password so what do they want? I hope someone knows.

Do you or did you have a Hotmail account? M$ likes to use that one for stuff for some reason.

Found this. Don't know if it will help or not.

Let me first confirm that, PIN password option for login will not be enabled when you go to Safe Mode. You will only be allowed to use a Password to access your PC. If it is a Local account, then sadly you don't have any option to fix this, unless you have password recovery disk.

If you're concerned about, you can still able to boot your system in Safe Mode with Networking. But you'll still need a password to reach desktop screen.

    1. Restart your PC. When you reach the sign-in screen, hold the Shift key and select the Power button, and then select Restart.

    2. After your PC restarts, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options >Startup settings > Restart. After your PC restarts, you should see a number of options. Press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with networking.

That is where I am stuck. I don't know what it wants. It will not accept MS password. I normally use MS pin to log in to pc. If it wants local account, I didn't know there was a password for that. I have a MS account in my user accounts. Thanks for the interest and research.

Create a new Windows User Account with password.... Restart and use the new one and then see how it goes.

That worked. I created a fictitious local user with a password and administrator rights. It took about 15 minutes to get past the welcome screen, but it worked.

An update to this. I was able to reset the password for the original account with the CMD command "net user (account name) (new password)". I didn't want to reset it, I had hoped to recover the original but everything is good now. Thanks to those who contributed.
