I have a Lenovo M90 SFF Desktop - i3 - 4GB RAM that hangs when trying to install Win 10. I installed Win 10 on the HDD about eighteen months ago without issue. Now, the owner wants to move to an SSD.

I installed a Samsung 860 EVO Sata III SSD and burned a fresh copy of the Win 10 ISO through the media creation tool. Booted from the USB as normal but it failed the first time with the error "windows 10 install windows could not format a partition on disk 0".

I followed some "fixes" but with each one, it took up to an hour to move to a point where I can either try to install Windows or format the SSD on the newly created partition. When I get to that point, it just hangs.

To see if it could possibly be the drive at fault, I pulled the SSD and put it into an older ThinkPad and completely installed Windows in about 10 minutes.

I have attached screenshots of the BIOS for reference. I have tried changing Confiogure SATA as IDE.

I have no idea why this is happening, especially given the success on the HDD.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks

Hi cspgsl. I would update the motherboards BIOS to the latest version and see if you can install Windows 10 successfully on the SSD.

After updating the BIOS to the latest version, after you install the SSD in the desktop, does the Samsung SSD show up in the BIOS at all?

Thank you both for your posts.

The Lenovo list did not report on the M90 so one would expect it to be able to install the latest build of Win 10.

Before I read your post on updating the BIOS I decided to take the SSD that I had put it into the older ThinkPad and see if the desktop would recognize the Windows 10 installation. It did !! I have tried this before without success so I wasn't expecting it to work.
I then saw that it accepted the digital activation from the previous installation of W10 on the old HDD.
Thinking I had nothing to lose and only time to gain, I proceeded to install and restore the user programs and data, all the while thinking that this shouldn't work. Here it is, day 3 and all is well so, I am letting sleeping dogs lie.
