Good afternoon gentlemen, I am back with a new issue.

I am working on a friends PC and task with a simple task I have preformed many times. Installing a Wireless network card, cleaning up system, installing a Virus scanner, setting updates to load criticals ones automatically.

    System Info:

    Cumputer type: IBM Clone
    Operating Sys: WinXP Home
    Mother Board: ASUS A7V8X-x
    Display Device: Nvidia GeForce Fx5200
    Memory: 512M
    Hard Drive: 80GB

    Added:
    Wireless NIC: Netgear WPN311 RangeMax

I installed and used Super Anti-Spyware Free edition: clean removed a few small items, nothing serious. Installed MCAFEE Ver. 8; installed, updated and ran full scan. No viruses found.

I installed the Netgear WPN311 card and installed the drivers, connected to my friends network with issues.

Connect to internet and start running MS updates. After SP2 seemed to fail/stall I rebooted re-installed it. I ran a few more updates that had downloaded to install. After the next rebooted, the computer could see the Linksys router along with a few of the neighbors wireless routers but could not obtain an IP address. I tried resetting the router but, no luck. I check my friends Apple laptops, they all could connect. I pulled out my IBM laptop, connected with out issues. I removed and re-installed the NIC drivers, no luck I Assumed the Card had ate it and sent my buddy to return it.

    3 days later:
I got the new card installed and no luck. Still would not obtain an IP address. Remember some problem with the updates I start to restore the computer to a former state. After going back to before I installed SP2 the card started working. (yeah) This time I re-downloaded sp2 and let it load almost two hours. After the re-boot, the system was working fine. Started updating a list of updates, guess what, it now will not obtain an IP address again.

Does or has anyone every heard of a Microsoft update cause problems like this? I did not see driver or hardware updates in the list.

    Updates installed after sp2:

Security Update for Windows XP (KB888302)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873339)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885836)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB888162)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB888835)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB891871)

Have you tried these IPCONFIG commands; /RELEASE, /RENEW and /FLUSHDNS (capitals are for clarity only)?

Also, I haven’t tried it but this has helped others, download and run it http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
