I was given a old Dell c540, it works great, but need to know if I leave it on to long in a confined space using the ac wall adapter, heat I know, will build up, could this potentially damaging components in side the computer, or is there a built in thermal switch to shut it down to avoid this....

If you are going to constantly run the laptop wirh the AC/Adapter. You should remove the battery from the laptop.

In a confined space, it will over heat and shut down possibly causing major damage. I never put my laptop directly on my lap. I have a laptop holder that I use. Most laptops have the fans on the bottom and they are usually right where it sits on you leg. I agree about removing the battery also.

Ok, thanks, I though some sort of safety device in side the laptop would shut it down. I was trying to get get rid of bed bugs, see other post.

If you leave your laptop switched on in a confined space it will get hot only if you are using it. Most laptops will shut down the screen after a few minutes when not used.
It may also be set to hibernate after preset time - will not get hot.
I would suggest you stay with your original Post re Bed Bugs removal. Neil.
