I am getting a new Dell laptop with Windows 7 pre-loaded on it. I also have a Gateway desktop that has Windows XP on it. When I get the new laptop:

    1. Will I be able to use the new Dell laptop reinstall disc with Windows 7 on it to load Windows 7 onto my Gateway desktop or will there likely be conflicts?

    2. Assuming that I can use the reinstall disc to load Windows 7 onto my desktop, is it legal to do so? I think I remember reading something about Microsoft requiring that every computer in a person's house must have a unique copy of the software.

I would like each machine to be running on the same platform and wondering if I need to go out and buy a copy of Windows 7 for the desktop.

No - for two reasons at least .....

You are only licensed to install Windows 7 on a single computer from a given installation CD.

The Dell disk is most likely fingerprinted to your laptop and will not install anywhere else and even if it does it will not activate.
    No, see above re licensing.
    Yes
