Resolved Will antiviruses detect trojans?

I just found a trojan in my recycle bin, and it was found by Malwarebytes (which was not running at the time my computer was infected). Up until this point, the only real-time protection I've been using is MS Security Essentials, under the impression it would stop all types of malware, not just viruses.

OK--I've got MWB running 24/7 now (pro version), but I'm wondering--was this a lapse in a job that my antivirus should have taken care of? Are there other free av programs that do normally take care of trojans? In other words, should I switch and find another av program that is better than MSSE?

No. If one program did it all, that is all you would need. MBAM usually finds most of the spyware/malware.
What makes you so sure that MBAM put it there? Most programs have their own Vault or as in MBAM Quarantine and do not use the recycle bin. Even when you empty their Vault, it does not go to the recycle bin.

 

Mr. Bill, I am 98% sure I got it w/ a drive-by download--I was given a warning page about a Firefox update, and then all of a sudden a (what I believe to be) rogue update was on my desktop. I deleted it, so that's how it woudl have ended up in my recycle bin.

At least this is how I think I got it. I had earlier in the week, cleaned out the recycle bin with a system file cleaner, so I am putting two plus two together....

OK then in that case, its not like I should junk MSSE, then, because other av programs would likely miss that or another trojan....

 

Just to clarify--I didn't say that MWB put it there; it was there (if my conjecture is correct) b/c I deleted a suspicious file from my desktop; after it was placed in the recycle bin, MWB then found it.
