I have a fairly new (but used so no warranty) laptop that started giving me trouble a couple of days ago. It's an HP 17 bsoxx. When waking up from the sleep function it does not recognize wifi and tells me to plug in an ethernet cable. Through trial and error I found that if I tried to lock/unlock the switches on the underside of the laptop I can get the wifi to work again. BUT as soon as the system goes to sleep the problem starts all over again on the wake up. Any suggestions how to fix this? I'm worried that eventually playing with the switches will stop working to fix this problem.

Your power management settings likely are turning off the wifi in sleep & hibernation mode. In the power mgmt advanced settings there will be an option to not let power mgmt affect the wifi adapter.

Hi Nokanda, a little more info would help. I would assume that your OS could be W10 (I have a fairly new (but used so no warranty) laptop) but your Profile shows your OS is XP?
    I have a HP 1000 Notebook running W10 Home 64bit.
In Control Panel > Choose what closing the lid does > Change settings that are currently unobtainable > I have Sleep on all 3 options when on battery and Fast Start and Sleep are checked in the Shutdown settings area.
I have not experienced any problems if I close the lid and then open it a couple of hours later.
Please supply more info on your laptop OS etc.

thank you both of you! unfortunately another strange problem is that this website won't load on my laptop (says it takes too long) so I'm slipping this in before I start work. Yes, I'm running Win10 but don't know what version. I'll update my profile. I'm going to print out your suggestions and see if that will help when I get home tonight. I'll let you know.

Ok, it must have had "something" to do with the buttons on the bottom of the laptop because since I played around with them I haven't had any more instances of the internet problem. I did look for the suggestions made by retiredlearner and TonyT but could not find an option to keep wifi on when the computer sleeps. It's moot anyway since it seems to have resolved itself. I wish I could take the credit for fixing it but honestly I have no idea why it's working ok now. Thanks for your help guys, it was much appreciated!
