Pardon my ignorance but is WiFi the same as Wireless LAN?

I have noticed that some Netbook PCs are advertised as having WiFi and others as having Wireless LAN.

I have Googled both terms and they appear to be the same (IEEE 802.11) but are they the same?

Can a Netbook with inbuilt Wireless LAN connect to WiFi "hotpoints" eg at Hotels, airports etc?
    Thanks

    Thanks Tony.
I was almost sure that they are the same HOWEVER I have a PDA with 'WiFi' and a NetBook with 'Wireless Lan'. When I boot the NetBook it 'finds' two 'wireless LAN's (probably neighbour's Wireless routers) yet when I invoke 'WiFi' on my PDA it doesn't find them.
    Thanks again.

There are settings on the PDA for wifi to turn it ON and to configure it. Check those. Also, some older PDAs have low quality wifi adapters. If the PDA indeed has a wifi adapter and it doesn't detect wlans then it's either:
    broke
    not setup
    not turned on.

    Thanks Tony
Everything is ok now. The neighboring Wireless LANs must have been off at the time I looked for them as I now see them (on the PDA).
    Thanks for your assistance.
