I use a dial up ISP at the beach. I was using my Vista lap top one day, clear weather, just stopped working. It says can't detect a dial tone. The phone works fine. Tried a different ISP, same thing. Tried my daughter's XP lap top and it works fine. Came home, dialed the same number, and my vista lap top works fine. Is my modem starting to go bad? My home phone is Comcast, beach phone is twisted pair. Help.

Although I've never heard of this, I would be inclined to think something is wrong with the modem.

Is there a difference in the way the dial tone "sounds "?

Using a hand-set if you dial a digit is there much/any static on the line?

If there are other devices connected to the line, like hand-sets, answering machines, faxes, etc, try disconnecting them.

Same here, getting quite a while for me too, but I seem to remember working on them well. I try to compare them to DSL modems. :)

If it works fine at your main home, then i would say it is the line at the other place,Next time go to a friends house close to yours and see if it does the same thing..
