Resolved wi-fi needs frequent rebooting

    I have a Netgear N300 Wireless Router; Model No. WNR2000; N300 WNR2000v4 that requires rebooting on average 2-to-3-times per week. It is 3 years old. Time for a new router? Or, is it a IP issue with my cable company? Any thoughts? Bob F

    Could be a little of both. Usually a router is like a modem also. Either good or bad as it works or don't work. Like broke or not broke. :D
    Call you ISP and ask them to Ping you when it is down and see what they say.

    Thanks Mr Bill & retiredlearner -- The ping idea is something I have not done and will do. I have worked with support and have the latest updates. I also tried some routine troubleshooting today: line connections, placement, etc. The cable attached to the router may have been slightly displaced. I will see if this helps. Thanks again for the help.

    Having the ISP ping you won't tell you if anything is awry with the router, all it will let you know is the ping response, which should be none as the default setting in that router is to not respond to WAN pings.

    The ISP can ping the modem and run other diagnostics on the modem, but not your router.

    The 2 routes I'd take are:
    1. upgrade the netgear to the latest available firmware.
    2. if no joy, do a hard re-set on the netgear and start from scratch setting it up.

    If no issue w/ the ISP connection, and still have problems, get a new router.

    Didn't say it would tell them if anything is awry with the router. :confused: This lets them know that they can't get to the router and will advise a tech of this and get it fixed. :D Beats you calling them and begging them to come out and fix something. ;)

    No problemo. I knew you intended that. Where I live they are always anxious to have their techs come out. I have the reverse problem with my cable ISP. I run diagnostics on my LAN, test the signals outside and then request the ISP to have the tier 2 guys check the lines and boxes on the street. But they always insist on sending a level 1 tech out!

    Here also. It is always shut everything down. Turn on the Modem, Router or Modem Router and let them settle down and do their thing for a couple of minutes. Then turn you PC back on and hope for the best. :D
    Standard reading protocallllllllll....:eek:
    Then a higher up if needed. Then a tech as a last resort. :(

    Good actions recommended -- thanks. However, I forgot the #1 rule of troubleshooting: check the cables! I had a loose cable. Believe me, this is embarrassing even for an intermediate-level user like me. The router had fallen off the shelf recently and although the cables were intact, a cable became loose. Thanks again for the solutions and time spent trying to solve my dilemma.

    Agree. Sometimes you can't see you nose because your face is in the way. :D
    Most of the time we don't look for the easy/simple stuff. Like to make it hard on ourselves
