Why would you recommend upgrading to Win 7 from XP Pro?

I'm really happy w/ XP which is why I passed on Vista (aside from all the issues I read about it), so why would I want to go w/ Win 7?
The software I run is fine w/ XP and I don't foresee any software changes in the near future.
I tend to stay w/ what works, so wants the advantage?
    Thx

XP should run fine for several more years to come. So many people like yourself have no real need to switch.

There is a pretty steep learning curve...that once mastered adds to your resume and helps you climb the ladder to becoming a super geek.

If it ain't broke don't fix it :D

Like you I'm with XP most of the time and unless I need to upgrade I won't. I skipped ME and Vista but may have to step up to 7 on the next HW change. From what I've seen of Vista I hate it and although 7 does have the look/feel of Vista it doesn't appear to have the footprint.

Don't listen to me though, if I had my way we'd still be using BBC Basic

    I don't recommend upgrades...ever...

Let me start of by saying I like W7. I've been runing it on my home machine since RC was released and it's been flawless except fort a couple of programs I was able to install using Compatibility mode.

I would definitely support running W7 over Vista any day. I like it even more than XP.

Now, the actual questions was about "upgrading" to W7 from XP. Bottom line is I sdon't support upgrading ANY operating sustem unless absolutely unavoidable. It just causes hassles and perpetuates problems that have accumulated over time. The other problem is that many, many XP machiens simply can't run W7 without some kind of hardware upgrades.

If someone is running XP on a computer and everything is runnign fine, then why upgrade? It will only cause problems with drivers and hardware and will, bottom line, run slower.

I usually recommend staying with XP until they are ready for a new computer and then decide what operating system...

That's probably why upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 is not an option :D

But if you don't upgrade to 7 what will your neighbors say?!? :D

Actually, I find the wallpapers in Win 7 to be WAAAAAY prettier than those in XP. ;)

If everything you need to do works fine in XP, then, indeed, there really is no reason for you to upgrade.

It might be that in a number of ways, Win 7 is more "secure" than XP but again, that just might not be an issue.

I can install cool gadgets on the Win 7 desktop like BBC Radio (streaming) and webcam apps so I think Win 7 is very cool. Coolness is my current upgrade motivation.

I've got a 78 year old friend whose daughter has been urging him to upgrade to XP/Vista for many years.
He has Windows 98 and all he does is check his webmail and 3 websites (on dialup).
I installed 98SE and did a few tweaks to speed things up for him.
He's happy with what he has.

I recommend upgrading to anyone who's not happy with what they've got now (I also took this stance when Vista first came out).

hmmmm, ok here goes, my first post (I think)

Got a Compaq 6710b laptop (forget what the newest trendy name for them is) which has a recovery partition. It came with vista business preloaded within 1 month of getting my machine I had bad sectors on the HDD. At the time of replacing the HDD I got the supplier to upgrade me to XP Pro (the machine only came with 1gig of RAM - for vista that is inadequate as we know).

Since then I have got an additional 2gigs so now the machine would run Vista a lot better I am sure. But now I am thinking that since vista is a dog perhaps Win 7 is an option. I figure if the machine can run vista it should handle win 7?

Have searched (googled) a bit for HP 6710b and windows 7 but got nothing useful. So can anyone tell me if this is an option. And if so should I got the netbook (that's the new term isn't it?) or get a CD/DVD install and just get rid of the pesky restore partition (which I am sure I cannot change to win 7 without tech support?)

    Thanks

    Simon

Windows 7 do not upgrade if you do not need it

If you are using XP pro and it is working well for you then I agree with the forgoing posts, you should not upgrade. Windows XP is a well tried OS and it is thoroughly understood by support professionals and hardware manufacturers. You yourself have likely got a large background of learnt experience so if there is nothing additional you want to do, do not throw that away and take a chance leaving Windows XP for an "upgrade" to Windows 7. It would be more sensible to move to Apple.

I agree. Stick with XP, as long as you like. However, eventually, there will be applications that are written for Win 7 that take advantage of the new OS's capabilities.

I'll give it another 5 years, but you'll be on your own without support for XP on the part of Microsoft since a couple of months ago. So if you get new hardware for your system, there won't be any new drivers, not even for 32-bit.

More power to you, though. A good friend of mine is still using Windows 2000, with absolutely no plans to upgrade either his hardware, or OS. ;)

    XP - directx9
    vista - directx10
    win7 - directx11???

Most of my friends prefer using XP, but they change to vista because of dx10.
DirectX really does give big difference in terms of graphic and gaming.
I guess this bunch of monkeys gonna change to win7 next year :p

Unless Microsoft stop supporting XP maybe I will if & only if I can't find any drivers for XP for a new device I would like to use!

    MS did stop supporting XP;)

Just like finding drivers from win98 is difficult - someday XP will be the same way.

I installed the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, on the report it said I needed a upgrade graphics adapter. I contacted Dell and they wanted $430 for a REFURBISHED one. Are they crazy? I couldn't even sell my whole laptop for that on ebay! I'll just stick with my Windows XP Pro SP3. It runs like a racehorse with the 2GB RAM that is on it. Microsoft will support it until April 2014. Well before that time comes,we will all know if Windows 7 is the real thing,or just a makeover of Vista. I'm a true Microsoft fan, but for the time being, why fix what isn't broken? Long live Windows XP Pro!
