Without any warning USB sticks inserted into computer USB slots fails to open as is the DVD player "E" not shown in Computer short cuts. This appears to have started after using DataLifeguard Diagnostic for Windows 7.

Data Lifeguard diagnostics that you used on your external HDD should not affect your windows 7 settings on your internal HDD. Is this the same computer that can't open Help and Support? If it is and since you are having so much trouble with this install of Windows 7 why not try a new install of the OS. I did many data lifeguard diagnostic testing on my external HDD's over the years and never had any problems with the internal HDD's or usb ports on both desktops and laptops.

Yes the computer is the same. A new install of Windows 7, does it require a restore Factory Settings? as Windows Vista in my case was preinstalled by HP and obtained Windows 7 as an update from HP and requires windows Vista to be installed. A factory setting take a full two days.

HP computer came with 4 disc to reset to Factory Setting and disk was bought to update to Windows 7 64bit. Update require that Vista is installed. The whole procedure is a lengthily procedure.

MY upgrade was done through the Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Anytime Upgrade? I printed out a copy of the email that was sent to me with the product id key? My HP Pavilion dv4-2167sb Notebook PC crashed on 11-06-2014. HP had sent me a set of recovery disks in 2010 that I used to perform a factory reset of Windows 7 Professional 64bit on the above 11-06-14 date. When it finished installing I went into the Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Anytime Upgrade clicked on it used my email product id key to reinstall my Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit upgrade without a hitch. You should not have any problem getting your to Windows 7 reinstalled especially with the Windows 7 OS upgrade disk you bought. Unfortunately it does take some time to perform a reinstall to factory settings. I hope this helps.

lj50, yes indeed, it helps me. Unfortunately, I am in a predicament of the worse case, computer refuses to recognise the DVD drive and USB sticks. No icons are displayed. Using device manager, DVD drive is reported to be working as the USB stick. It is just Windows refuses to recognise both. Unless someone like yourself can solve my predicament, I am in deep trouble, nothing like this over 40 years of computing. AS the old saying goes "there is always a first time ". Thanks Bobby.

When you reboot the machine during the HP splash screen there should be an option on the lower left side of that screen to access the start menu. I believe it's the esc key. Once in that screen there will be a list. On my two HP laptop computers it's F9 to change the boot order. Change it to CD-ROM put the DVD in then Save changes and exit choose yes then hit enter, but make sure you have the DVD in the DVD drive.

lj50, Just can not explain, on returning to computer after a break, I noticed the "Devices with removable storage" was again high lighted, clicking restored all drives to be shown and active. I honestly, unable to explain what has happened, except that I am most relieved all is back to normal, except the H&S remain dormant. My thanks to all who contributed to solve this error.
