Try running Patch My PC and see if it finds any missing Windows updates. The program is also good for a host of other 3rd party updates too.

Belarc Advisor and Secunia PSI are two good alternatives as well (plus they can perform a security analysis of your PC too), but Patch My PC requires the least amount of user intervention.

Hi iwildo, I installed W7 Pro on a HD in January 2014. Since then there have 291 updates installed from MS.
Just installed 1 Important and 5 Optional 15 minutes ago. Neil.

ahaaa ...thank you , i wondered about that ... no ,i never did the SP update .... this makes sense that if no SP1 then no updates ...

is it too late to do so ?? if i do it now will all the updates since then be available ?

is there more than one W7 SP1 ?

i always do manual updates and try to read KB notes about each update b4 i accept the installation .... expect it will be a big update to catche up ?

    tnx

Yes you will be better off doing a selection of 20 or 30 at a time and manual install. Should not have any major hiccups and you always stop and start installing updates when you want. Neil.

Patch My PC may alert you to SP1 and install it for you.

James, on your recommendation I just downloaded Patch My PC and ran it, but I'm somewhat dubious about it.

It found five "out-of-date" programs, but four of the five program patches it wanted install were for versions older than those already installed (I maintain an up-to-date library of the installation files for every program on my computer, so it was easy to check).

I haven't figured how (or if) Patch My PC can patch the single program that needs updating without also installing the four out-of-date patches, so I'll do it the old fashioned way, instead.

    Hi Jim,

Which programs are you referring to? I haven't had that issue yet that I recall, but I was hoping the program would possibly kick-start iwilldo's Windows Update service into working again.

I used Patch My PC on a new XP installation last year when auto-updates failed to work (before activating XP).

It said I needed to install versions of Shockwave Player, IrfanView, and Google Earth that were older than the installed versions. It also said I needed to install the same version of Thunderbird that was already installed (at the same time, it told me that Thunderbird wasn't installed at all). The only program that actually needed to be upgraded was Flash Player.

As far as Windows Updates are concerned, I check for those, using the Control Panel link, every day. The one that shows most frequently is the definitions update for MS Security Essentials.

    Agreed.

I've only used the program for Windows Updates in certain situations. I mainly use Patch My PC as a second opinion alternative if the need arises.

Evidently, the author of the program needs to update his database for some 3rd party programs.

Two other update checkers I use are FileHippo and FilePuma. Neither one detects everything requiring an update but, together, they detect most. I've never been able to get Secunia PSI to work properly.

I'll check out FilePuma and add it to my list.

File Hippo is a great update checker, too, but it just alerts users to updated programs. The scan results don't necessarily mean an installed program is a security risk - just that there is new version of that program is available.

Have you tried Secunia PSI version 2.0? (the download link I posted above is for that version) Version 3.0 offers less user interactivity, and I don't think it works that well compared to version 2.0. I always update Flash with Secunia because it remove zombie files.

Do you have the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7 installed?
