    Why isn't MSCONFIG working?

When I go into "Run" and try to open msconfig, I get a message that says:
This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

This makes no sense as mine is the only account of on this (home) computer and is rated as an administrator. Please help. Thanks!

Try, at a cmd prompt, sfc /scannow.

If ctrl/alt/del, results in similar message, or task manager closes immediately, you have a virus.

Whenever I hit ctrl-alt-delete my mouse turns into an hourglass for a split second and nothing happens. I don't even get the task manager screen. Can you help?

This is interesting... when I type "free virus scan" or "virus scan" into Google, the window closes immediately. Anyone recognize this virus? how do I deal with it? Thanks

    security?

You may be correct; it could be an infection. What security do you have? Suggest you search this site for advice.

I ran AdAware, Spybot, and the third prog. on that page and Msconfig and ctrl-alt-delete still won't work! Is there a web site that lists viruses so I can see if perhaps the one I have is listed?

    You need all these.

You need an antivirus program and a firewall to be safe.

Meantime, try an online scan, but get the others too.

First, it sounds like you have no firewall running. XP has a minimal firewall called ICF, see if its running:

Start > run > type Services.msc > ok: XP's Services will display. Scroll down to Internet connection Firewall... and to the right under the Status column should be "started" and next to that under startup type: Auomatic. If not, double click on that line and in the properties dialog box - startup type: change to auto and below that click start bar.

    Do on-line scanning for malware:

    On-line virus scanner: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

    On-line trojan scanner: http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Get a 3rd party firewall and virus scanner soonest.

    Regards - Charles

    Sparrow, didn't see your post.

One disagreement: Kerio is not the one I would recommend, its rule based, and IMO not for someone unfamiliar w/ firewalls.

Sygate - a combo of app w/ optional rule making would be my recomendation.

    Regards - Charles
