W2kPro has several Applog errors with source TrueVestor Services. Most are "TrueVector driver. Startup timed out. "

My research indicates this may be a possible conflict between Zone alarm (not installed) and IE6.0

    One error shows

The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( True Vector Service ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: .

which also seems related to Zone Alarm.

How do I get rid of ALL refs to Zone alarm, or whatever may be causing this error.

    I am running Norton Antivirus 2002 on W2KPro SP2

Thanks in advance for your alwasy excellent help.

It'd probably be easiest to re-install ZA and then follows ZL's instructions to uninstall it cleanly.

You yourself may not have installed ZA but, it is possible that ZA was installed along with some other software. And sometimes Without your knowledge

And if that should be the case it can be a B**** to get rid of As it may not show up in Add/Remove.

I have caught some newer software doing this. And unless the install is watched CAREFULLY a whole bunch of USELESS or Un-WANTED stuff will get installed.

A good amount of newer software needs to have STRICT ATTENTION paid to the install porcess. And should be done as a Custom install if at all possible. And even then things that you do not want still get installed,

Yes. TrueVector is, AFAIK, exclusive to ZA and, therefore, the problems must stem from a past installation.

Comments from a member of ZoneLabs support staff:

    and

So ... it would seem that ZA has almost certainly been installed at some stage in the past.

Two options: either post the full message and we can hopefully sort it out from there or try an install/uninstall.

I do not know about 2K and how you would go about this but in Win98 I would do a REGEDIT and a find for ZoneLabs.

If was indeed on the system that should ( or would ) help me located it.

That would not help; the keys relating to the TrueVector service (for example, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsmon) do not contain the word "ZoneLabs ".

That may be true in this case as 2K is the OS. It is ( or may not be ) the same as 98

But actually I should have said VSMON and not Zonelabs anyway.

That was an error on my part.

Actually in 98 I would use Startup Cop to find where it was stored and loading from anyway. Then do just disable it.

    But 98 and 2K ani't the same.

    Thanks fellows.

First OPSYS W2KPro all updates installed

I do try to perform CUSTOM installs & alwasy clean up startup folder with 'msconfig' and uninstall with Ctrl Pgms/add-rem pgms

Brett U may be correct about it being installed previously, so I'll do an inst/uninst, and post results.

Be sure to follow the uninstall instructions (see previous line) carefully.

    Well that was surprisingly unsuccesssful.

I tried to install & got an error something like "can't install....ZoneAlarm still running "

So I downloaded the program & tried to run un-install, also unsuccessful, so I followed the detailed instrucitons for uninstall on Win2K...delete these files.........REGEDit the following.............

I was alarmed as some of the references were not valid directory names, Some of the registry entries were not there & some files could not be deleted. I chose to delete the file names that were in similar directories, some couldn't bee deleted, so I deleted them in safe mode.

Tried to uninstall & got the same message ................so I quit.

Not sure thre's any impact to my machine with this thing lurking in the background, or if another program is providing the True Vector error in thge App seciton of the Event log.

    Error now reads.

The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( True Vector Service ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: .

I think the IE failure abend is caused by one of those annoying pop-up ads, but will post here again when I confirm this.

Let' see if their tech support can help at all.

Hey Arie. I owe the folk in here BIG TIME for their help. If I can give a tiny bit back form something I've learned, it's only a tiny contribuiton. I wish more would do that as I've found I have the same prob as others & the thread just trails off into the sunset.
