I have Netscape 7.1 and Windows XP Home.

For some reason, the Java plug-in doesn't seem to install, ever.

It seems to me that it worked some time ago, but now when I go to a page that requires the Java plug-in, I get a window that says "Click here to get the plug-in ".

I then click, and follow the Java instructions and install, and everything seems to have installed OK (they tell you to close all applications including the browser during install). But when I open Netscape and go to the same page (any page that requires a Java plug-in) the window still remains and asks that I "Click here to get the plug-in ". I have tried this a number of times.

If I look at "about:plugins ", under "Installed Plug-ins" I see "Java Plug-in" listed 7 times with between 1 and 7 lines under each listing, giving the MIME type, with description as either Java Applets, Java Beans, or in one case, Java Virtual Machine for Netscape. All are listed as "Enabled ".

But the Java plug-in doesn't work. What do I do?

Do you have Java (Applet) enabled in your preference?

    I think so

Antony, thanks for the quick reply.

Under "Preferences>Advanced>Scripts and Plug-ins ", I have the "Enable JavaScript for Navigator" box checked. Is that what you mean?

    No.

    In Preference > Advanced,
    There's section...
Features that help interpret web pages
    Enable Java
    Enable native object scripting
    ...

Make sure the "Enable Java" is selected.
    (Java is NOT JavaScript.)

Antony, thanks again. I really didn't think that was it.

But yes, both "Enable Java" and "Enable native object scripting" are checked in "Edit>Preferences>Advanced ". So why don't I see Java? I also tried a browser test page (http://www.b2knet.com/) which tells me that Java is not enabled but lists the Java plug-in 7 times.

    Xelaw,

    Look in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\plugins

You should see something similar to this:
    NPJava11.dll
    NPJava12.dll
    NPJava13.dll
    NPJava14.dll
    NPJava32.dll
    NPJPI142_05.dll
    NPOJI610.dll

If not, then go to the Java folder located here: C:\Program Files\Java
and copy these files to your Netscape plugin folder. This is assuming that you did install Version 1.4.2_05, which is the version you should have, due to security vulnerabilities in versions older than this one. See this thread:

    Ramona, thanks.

The list of files you mentioned is in my folder C:\Netscape\Netscape\Plugins
(I don't have Netscape in a folder in Program Files), while the folder j2rel1.4.2_05 (which has these files as well) is in C:\Program Files\Java\. Is that a problem? In any case Java is still not enabled, in spite of what I check in Edit>Preferences>Advanced.

    Any suggestions?

    Xelaw,

The Netscape and Java folders location should have no effect on your problem. Look in Add/Remove and see how many instances you have of Java, and in Control Panel | Java. If you have more than one instance, then uninstall all but the current version.

Also in your Control Panel, do you have Java enabled. If so, which Java is running? The Sun Java or the one from Microsoft?

Is that just that page you have problem with? or any pages with Java?

"(I don't have Netscape in a folder in Program Files) "

Where is your Netscape? I have mine in a folder outside Program Files, on purpose, and if it has the Plugins folder and Netscp.exe you got Netscape7.x.

Ramona, I have now just one instance of Java installed. (I had two, the second one being the _04 version, but I unistalled that after I received your previous reply.)

Antony, as far as I know, it's the Sun version (I keep downloading it from their site). In the Java Plug-in Control Panel that pops up, under "Advanced" I just switched from "Use Java Plugin Default" to "JRE 1.4.2_05 in C:|Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.02_05" and that didn't make any difference - Java still doesnt work. In the "Browser" tab in this Java Control Panel, I have both "Microsoft Internet Explorer" and "Netscape 6 or later" checked. (Java works in IE, but I very rarely use IE.)

Westside, I have Netscape in a separate folder also on purpose, and everything else in Netscape works fine.

The strange thing is that I remember that until 2 or 3 months ago, the Java plugin was working fine. At some point, I noticed that it wasn't working anymore, but I didn't get around to trying to do something about it (except downloading the plugin again and again) until yesterday.

OK, now I don't know what else to do.

I uninstalled Java, then reinstalled it, and it still doesn't work in Netscape. What is there left to do? I don't feel like uninstalling and reinstalling Netscape. Maybe I'll wait until Netscape 7.2 comes out and install that and see how that works.

    Thanks, anyway.

    Xelaw,

As far as Netscape preferences are concerned, you've done everything correctly. Something is stopping Java, and I wonder if it could be your Firewall settings, or maybe a third-party program you may have installed? Have you tried disabling your Firewall, or lowering the Security level to see if that might be the problem?

    Xelaw,

Another thought: when you uninstalled all versions of the Java plugin-ins, did you also delete the Program folders? If not, do so: C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\bin\javaw.exe

Also look in your Add/Remove and see if you have Java Web Start listed. If so, delete that program.

    Then: run regedit:
    Start | Run
Enter: "regedit" in the "Open" field

    Look at this registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ CLASSES\ CLSID\{8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93}

In the right panel what is the value given for "Data "? It should be:
    "Java Plug-in 1.4.2_05 "

    Ramona, I appreciate your efforts.

The last time I reinstalled Java (yesterday), I first uninstalled it using Add/Remove, then rebooted, then reinstalled it. All applications except Windows Explorer, including the browsers were closed during the installation.

Java WebStart is not listed in Add/Remove.

I went to the Registry key you mentioned, and sure enough, it says "Java Plug-in 1.4.2_05 ".

But Java still doesn't work. (I use the Java test page http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.jsp to test it.) But like I said, it does work in IE, which makes me think that the problem is in Netscape, and not in Windows or Java.

    Xelaw,

What about your Firewall, did you try disabling it?

I use Microsoft's ICF (pre SP2). I disabled it, disconnected my cable connection, reconnected, opened Netscape - still no Java. Nice try, though.

    Me, too!

I am dying to see if there are any other suggestions, as I have exactly the same problem. I've gone through all the posts in this thread, checked what xelaw was told to check, everything's there, but java won't work on Netscape, although I can get it to work on I.E., as xelaw did.

Are we doomed to uninstall and reinstall Netscape?

    Hi Rose Queen,

I have run out of suggestions on this Java problem. A post was made by xelaw on another Forum, and hopefully he will get an answer there. I just bumped up the post, hoping that someone will answer. I'm sure he will post any reply that offers a fix, here on the Netscape/Mozilla Forum.

I started this thread a couple of months ago because the Java applet didn't work with Netscape 7.1, and we never got a good answer on how to get it to work.

Since then, I've upgraded to Netscape 7.2, and at first Java worked, and then it didn't work, and then it worked again, and yesterday it stopped working again!

I think I now know what the problem was. I have Java installed on my PC after having downloaded it (a number of times when I was trying to get things to work). The problem is, when you install it, it apparently tells the browser to use the the Java version just installed, whereas NS seems to have its own Java Virtual Machine version.

So in the Java Plugin Control Panrl (jpicpl32.exe), under the "Advanced" tab, you have to tell it to "Use Java Plugin Default ", and not go to the location where Java is installed. Then you have to Reboot. Until today, I never thought of rebooting.

Anyway, for the moment, it's working, and this final (I hope) post is for anyone who has a similar problem. I'm not sure if now it's working correctly in IE, but I don't care.
