This is fustrating me to the point where I want to get back to Netscape 6 (if I could find a DL site for it) or change browsers!

when I got to right click >Save image as>
and hit enter..the whole process from bringing up the "Save" window to when its saved and allowed me to move onto the next image is a staggering TWELVE SECONDS!!! My god...I just timed it.
During those 12 seconds you cannot move onto another image as netscape is basically frozen until the save cycle is complete, so to download a page of images would take a very long time.
Netscape 6 was NOT like this...you could move onto the next image while the previous one was still downloading! Why the heck was this changed? Will they do anything about it? Has anyone else got fustrated or even noticed? I cant understand why saving an image is now taking so long and its really P***** me off..!
My Pc is decent (I thought) 1.8 ghz Geforece4 on a T3 company network...

    Welcome to the Forum, Wildone_106

    Hi Wildone_106,

It sure doesn't take me 12 seconds to download a small image. Barely takes 1 second on a puny 800 MHz processor. How large are the images you're downloading, could you give us a link for the site, so we could test ?

    Thanks,

    Ramona :D

    Yep try this one:
    http://www.lo-mac.com/screens.php?id=962

And I dont think its the size of the image, because I just tried saving the the narrow logo .jpeg directly above the picture..and it took the exact same amount of time before I could get control back ( I timed with my stop watch) it seems to be the same no matter what the size of the image? At least to me, thanks for your help!

    Hi Wildone,

    Here are my results:

    F-15_displays.jpg 128 KB 10/10/02 1:58:34 PM
    masthead_left.jpg 17 KB 10/10/02 1:58:24 PM

As you can see it took very little time to download both jpg files. There was no wait to start downloading the second larger file.

Do you clear your Cache, both disk and memory on a frequent basis? Also clear your History and see if this helps. If not let me know.

BTW, you really don't want to go back to Version 6, it much less stable than 7.0.

    Hello,
If this problem just started then it might be the download manager. Goto Tools-Download Manager then, using CTRL, select a few of the downloaded files listed, then keep clicking remove from list until it is empty, you might need to select a few individually at the end. If you have had this problem since downloading Netscape 7 then this might not help.

    Thanks alot for those suggestions.
The problem started only with NS7 I never had this issue before I got the latest version. I cleaned out my cache and history, and emptied all the temp folders I could find but it had no effect I still had to wait before I could even click "Save as" again.
The Download manager kept freezing everytime I tried to remove something from the list so I gave up on that.
Any other ideas you might have?

    Wildone,

    Disable the Download Manager in:
    Edit | Preferences | Navigator | Downloads

    Select: Open a progress dialogue

    See if that helps.

uh I hate to say it as that was an excellent idea- but it did'nt make any difference, even when I turned the progress dialogue off completely. I tried it 3 times.. still 9 seconds :(

    Wildone,

Do you run Norton AntiVirus, and if so, is the NSPlugin component enabled?

    Hi again,
Close Netscape, do a find for a file named downloads.rdf, it should be in your profile folder, delete it then try to save a file again.

    Hi Metal,

A good find! The download.rdf file problem, is actually Mozilla Bug 159107

This is what I came up with:

    Hi Wildone_106,

The downloads.rdf file is located in your *.slt folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
    ---

The workaround to delete the downloads.rdf file still stands, as well as removing the entries in the Download Manager.

Also, a new Bug has been filed:
    http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=210282

    Another workaround suggested here:
    http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=132755

    --- Additional Comment #95 From Jonathan Fitton 2003-01-26 12:09 ----

I have found a simple work-around for this bug that will keep the downloads.rdf file from growing. Delete all entries in the Download Manager and then mark the
DOWNLOADS.RDF file as read-only. Based on my very limited testing, this appears to be effective. The download manager appears to continue functioning normally. If you open the Download Manager, all files you are currently downloading or have downloaded during the current session will be listed, but the file is not updated. If you exit and restart Mozilla and reopen the Download Manager, it will be empty.
    ---

I have not tried this workaround, and note that the author has done limited testing.

YES!!!! I found it, and it worked. I could'nt delete much in my download manager, it would keep crashing if I tried to delete more than 3 files say at a time but, with the .rdf gone it makes a huge difference thanks for your extreme kindness!

Btw, do you forum people work for netscape? Thanks for all the info!

    Hi Wildone_106,

Glad to hear that you found the file, and removing it made a difference!

Speaking for myself, I do this strictly on a volunteer basis, and no, not employed by Netscape. I'm retired, and do this for the sheer pleasure of being able to help a user solve a problem now and then... ;)
