Why does this critical update fail?

    I've tried continuously to update my Win XP Home edit. SP2 with the following critical update: Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB917283) but have failed to have it install itself many times. Any suggestions?

    So far, all the workarounds have failed.

    What exactly is the .Net Framework and do I really need to concern myself with the update? Could I just choose to "hide" the messages that I need to update?:confused:
