Why do my customize desktop icons in XP sometimes convert back to the default icon.
99% of them seem to hold the customized icon just fine.

The one that often changes has the file actually stored on my wife's computer which I access over our home network.

When I look at the Properties the customized icon is still there and the box checked Read Only is still checked.

All I do is temp uncheck the Read Only and then click Apply and the correct icon pops back on the desktop.

Why can't I lock it in permanently???

If you have more then 10 or 20 desktop shortcuts - move most of them to a folder on the desktop and see if that help.

    Steve,

    Thanks.

I have about 50 desktop shortcuts and I LIKE them!

    Why does the quantity matter?

Each and everyone takes video power/memory to display them. The more graphic they are the more juice they need.

Then again, I missed this part:
If her computer is turned off, do the icons go dark?
If so, move the file(s) to your computer:)

    Duh!

Thanks Steve, you hit the nail on the head.
Actually turning her computer off leaves the icon intact.
Even if I click on it, it goes nowhere but the icon still remains.

It is only if I reboot when her computer is off, that the icon reverts to generic.
    Makes sense.

    Rob
