    Each bootup of computer, Defender displays "computer not protected ", and also at times during sessions. I have tried procedure with cmd >Dism, shows no errors. Tried re-installing Defender, but caption says that Windows 10 has installed it already. Suggestion please in solving this error. Bobby.

    In the Windows search box type Defender...

    Click on SETTINGS.
    Is "Real Time Protection" set to ON?

    Steve, thank you. Checked and it is set to [ON]. Setting has never been set to [OFF] since update to Win 10. Report to MS has however been set to [OFF]. It is most annoying as you never sure if Defender ON or OFF and whether I am safeguarded or not. At present requires regular checks to be carried out and if needed to click the update. Unless there is a much quicker method. Bobby.

    Hi Bobby, Have a look in Control Panel > Programs and Features > and make sure there is no 3rd. party Anti-Virus program installed. (This may also be the reason for the video problem.) Are your Time and Date set correctly? Have you got Updates on Auto?

    Hello retiredlearner, I was forced to deactivate Defender, due to each time that I checked when working on computer, that Defender was not checking, requiring a scan to be made. I have been forced to install free Avast in the meantime. Time and Date are set correctly and Auto Update (recommended) appears to be ticked. Little wonder why so many people dislike Win 10.

    Control Panel-> Action Center

    Select the Change Action Center Settings. You should be able to tell it to Not alert you about Virus Protection.

    There are more who like and enjoy W10 (100's millions users). I feel there are more hardware related problems due to borderline pass of the MS pre-test. As I've stated many times before - I haven't experienced any problems with our 6 W10 installs. If Defender is not working properly, it is possible you have corruption in your upgrade. I would use the MCT and do a completely fresh ISO burn with your new DVD unit.

    As the saying goes "You can't please everyone all of the time ". If my copy of Defender is corrupt it is certainly not the fault of the Anniversary Update 1607, as to date not installed in my computer. MS has said the update could be delayed for some!!

    I'm running 1607 (OS Build 14393.82) and have received cumulative updates KB3176495 (10/8/16) KB3276936 (25/8/16) and KB3176934 (27/8/16) and all is running sweet as.
    You are right Steve with your link - that has been explained by MS in their FAQ's previously, probably where lifehacker.com got it from. It's part of the Security of W10 which is what MS are trying to achieve to protect users and maintain the integrity of the OS.
    I think Bobby's problem may be because there may have been a 3rd. party AV somewhere in his W7 version which has caused corruption to the W10 upgrade.

    It is some years now since installed a third party AV. Used MS MSE then Defender without much trouble, though to be honest both did from time to time, show the orange coloured screen. If Defender could be depended on, I would certainly use it. Bobby.

    When the MSE showed orange/brown colour - it usually advised that a scan was due. You can set this to take place under Security and Maintenance when the comp is not in use. If your Defender is not starting with normal OS startup, there must be a corruption in the setup somewhere. I can only think that there was a corruption in your W7 relating to Security and that has carried over with your upgrade to W10.
