I have a strange little problem here. One of my systems has lost both CD drives. Both are CD-RWs, one a Lite-On and one a Samsung. Neither will work when a CD is inserted. Going to Device Manager, I find yellow exclamation points next to both drives and the error message of "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)." I have tried uninstalling the drives and rebooting. New Hardware wizard also does not work. Going into BIOS, the drives are recognized and the information is correct. When I open the drive door and close, the green access lights come on (this also happens when the system is started). These drives are also not found in My Computer. Following the instructions for Microsoft's Q314060, I find no joy either. I recently did a virus scan and nothing was found.

When I ask my kids when this started, the best they can tell me is about 2 months ago. Go figure. :( I'm not sure what to try next. Any suggestions? I sure would like to get this thing going again. Thanks in advance.

    Mike

Gather you have dealt with the Upper and Lower filters so the next suggestion would be to reload the motherboard chipset drivers - possibly a controller problem ?? Worth a try :)

    Any new software loaded recently?

    Hi Pete,

The Upper and Lower Filters were addressed in the Microsoft article. No luck. No new software, that I know of. And there is "no knowledge of new software being installed" from my kids. I'll give the chipset drivers a try and see what happens.

Try running System File checker - at least 3 of the drivers are system files.

    Hi Mike,

Sometimes updating the chipset drivers doesn't kick in unless you give them a jolt. Try uninstalling the IDE Controller in Device Manager.

    Pete,

SFC did not help. As far as I could tell, it did not find any problems. Anything else to try?

    Matt,

I uninstalled the Secondary IDE controller in Device Manager and now I have more problems. The IDE controller has a yellow exclamation point and it gives me a code 10 error - Can not start the device. Now what?

Try another reinstall of the chipset drivers.

Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers there should be Primary IDE Channel, Secondary IDE Channel and the main IDE Controller. The controller is the one you need to uninstall.

    Matt,

Now that I've uninstalled what you wanted me to ( ), I am sorry to report that it didn't help.

    Pete,

No go on the reinstall of the chipset drivers either.

This is a strange one. Any other thoughts?

Disconnect the cables to both optical drives, boot into the Windows desktop, then shutdown and reconnect one, boot through again and reconnect the other.

Which burning program do you use? Try uninstalling and reinstalling it. If it is Nero, uninstall InCD, don't reinstall it unless you really need it. Check for any updates/patches for the burning program.

After that you could check the ASPI Layer (drivers). Try those others first and let us know if you have any luck.

    Mike, Matt, Pete et al,

I'm in agreement with everything you guys have been through thus far and am scratching my head re: where to go with this one next if Matt's last two instruction sets fail. Actually, I'm more inclined to ammend the first and then would encourage a little investigation and thinking time after completing the first but before starting the second. Let me put this revision on the table for consideration and comment.

Disconnect the cables to both optical drives, boot into the Windows desktop, then please advise status of the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in device manager. If any problems, stop here and advise. If AOK, shutdown and reconnect only one CDRW and that being the one jumpered as Master or if CS - the one on the terminating IDE connector, boot through again and advise re: IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in device manager and the optical drive itself in device manager - AOK vs problem status. If any problems, stop here and advise. If AOK and if drive is showing up in My Computer or Windows Explorer, test its reading ability with a store bought music CD and then with any data or program CD re: reading ability - please advise status. If AOK, try to burn anything to a blank CDR and advise result.

I'm going to stop here although we are far from done even if successful at every step - I just don't want you getting out to far ahead of what I think needs to be done in total. Also, for clarification, I'm just following Matt's step #1 in his above post but have put in a few intermediate steps so we can all get some more feedback while following his recommendation.

As an aside, I'm also going to assume Nero because of the brand drives present. If yes, please advise version #. Also, take a look at your program menu from the start button and looking from the bottom of the list first, try to make a determination if the kids have installed any other software which may also have burning capabilities - not just music related but also camera related.

If Nero is installed, please don't remove it yet. Again, I'm going to follow Matt's procedure above but am proposing we take this one step at a time and am only going to feed ammended instructions in stages. This should permit all of us to get the feedback necessary to isolate and correct your problem.

Mike - its not time for Lakewood yet.

    ;)

As an addition to Matt and Rockster's excellent advice .....
A super applet from Bill James - List Installed Programs which not only lists the progs, but also the date installed. I find it invaluable as a check list when making a fresh install.

    Matt, Rockster, & Pete,

The party's still raging! :D Here is what I have done. Everything has failed to this point, still the same problem.

1 - Disconnect drives form cable
2 - Boot system. received a boot error (secondary drives not found), hit F1 key to continue
3 - In Device Manager, I show Intel 82801DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CB and Primary IDE Channel
    4 - Shut down
5 - Reconnect termination IDE connector only (Lite-On drive) and boot
6 - Boot error, Secondary drive 1 not found, F1 to continue
7 - New Hardware icon does not appear, it usually does
8 - Yellow exclamation point on drive in Device Manager. Code 39 error
    9 - Shut down
10 - disconnect & reconnect IDE cable at the MB
11 - Connect only the other drive (Samsung)
12 - Boot error again like in step 6
13 - Found new hardware comes up, but could not install
14 - In Device Manager, yellow exclamation point, Code 39 error
    15 - Shut down
16 - install different working IDE cable with no change
17 - Run List Installed Programs with results following:

Nothing stands out as being installed within the last two months, except Window updates. The only burning software that was installed on this system was Sonic RecordNow 6.5.3 that came with the computer. I only installed it a couple days ago when I started trying to find a solution for this problem. The Lite-On drive was in another system and I put it into this system, therefore, no Nero program was installed.

Hopefully, this answers all the question you have to this point. I'll try any other suggestions to avoid a reinstall.

Pete hit on this earlier and I'd like to come back and run this to eliminate it if nothing else.

And this is Microsoft Knowledge Base Article #314060 re: corrupt registry and Code 39

Read them both and then try the one you are most comfortable with. Re-cable both of your opticals so everything fires up before doing either of these. If in doubt, error on the side of Microsoft.

    ;)

    Rockster,

That is one of the first things I tried, but I went in to check if the keys were back. There is no listing for the filters. All I have listed is Default, Class, EnumPropPages32, Icon, Install32, NoInstallClass, SilentInstall, and TroubleShooter-0. This is a real head-scratcher.

Yes it is. Because of the steps you've been through (1-17 in post 14), I'm scratching my head too. I would like you to check your drive jumpers although I doubt this is going to be an issue. Also unplug and replug the molex connectors and the IDE cables on both opticals (oxidation on contacts is always a possibility with older machines).

Once you've done the unplug replug thing with molex and IDE connectors and if either or both drives remain AWOL, lets shutdown again and unplug molex and IDE from both drives. Upon reboot, head immediately into the BIOS and if you see either of the opticals listed, remove them or select none for the appropriate drive location - on secondary IDE, (device 0 and device 1). Do not disable the Secondary IDE controller. Then go to the plug and play page and select NO for PNP OS installed. If there is a field to update or reset configuration data on boot, select YES. Now exit while saving changes and reboot. Let us know if you get any kind of error messages re: the drives (still disconnected) when booting.

This step may not be necessary but if it were my machine I'd do it. Uninstall Sonic Record Now if you still have it installed (I think you meant to say you uninstalled it a couple of days ago but your post #14 says you installed it). Then download and install RegCleaner from here. Run this to check for any leftovers from Your Sonic Software. You can also check on NEROXML which shows up in that installed software list. If it or any other Nero entries show up in RegCleaner, remove the registry entries (via checkmark) and then exit RegCleaner. Now go look for for the file in your computer and delete it and reboot again (drives still disconnected).

Then shutdown and reconnect drives. Reboot. Please advise status.

Other comments - WinMX is installed so you might want to run an online scan with Kaspersky and then heed the warnings re: file sharing applications. It also looks like an itunes update or installation occured thanksgiving weekend. ipod 2 PC software was also just installed (1/30) and I wold question your Adobe 8 installation as to whether or not all of that bloatware was included. We can get into some of this later but lets find those drives first.

    ;)

Look at doing a system restore to before editing the registry and maybe to before the drives disappeared.

    Matt,
I'd just as soon hold off on that for a minute but when was the registry edited?

Sure Rockster, "look at" I hoped wouldn't over-ride your suggestions/tests.

The registry is edited to "reset the filters "
Mike carried it out even before Pete suggested it. [Edit: There seems to be two methods offered by MS, the above is the manual method, the other method, I think, is automated.]
