I was recently able to install a Visioneer 7600 on my WIN XP system. Since I do not leave the scanner connected to the USB port most of the time, when I boot up WIN looks for the scanner 3 times. On WIN98 I was able to determine which programs were necessary to prevent the OS from trying to load the scanner, e.g., fbdirect, instantaccess, stillimagemonitor and registerdrophandler. I looked at WINini but do not see anything. When I start msconfig and look at the start up programs, the only familiar one is fbdirect. Does anyone know which program turns off the loading command?
    Thanks.

    in the registry:
    HKLM\Software\MS\Windows\Current Version\Run
    remove the visioneer programs.

The check Admin Tools\Services and see if there are any services for the scanner. And also set Windows Image Acquisition service to "manual ".

ackerberg - XP (or any NT based system) does not use win.ini, system.ini, autoexec.* or config.* (* indicating any ending) to start up. They are there in case older apps need them but are not part of the boot up process at all.
