I need to put together 2 desktop computers. I have been somewhat out of the loop and am not sure which processor to use. I have 3 computers now. Two of them are AMD Athlon XP 2400+ processors and one is a Pentiumn 4 2.8. They are all solid computers and I have very little trouble with them. I want something faster than the ones that I have now. Is there any comparison of the different processors that I can read somewhere.
    What is Centrino technology?
What is the difference between these processors?
    Celeron
    Celeron D
    Athlon XP
    Athlon 64
    AThlon XP
    Pentium 4
    Pentium M
    Xeon
    PowerPC G5

Centrino technology is for notebook computers.

I don't think you'll find that any current outfit will seem any faster than what you have. See this.

Yes, those machines should be some of the fastest around. My 1.7Ghz Athlon will run all but very latest games.

What applications do you want them to run? Some applications require large amounts of RAM. Some (like video editing) need lots of data swapping to and from the harddrive(s). Games need good graphics. If you think that those systems are "slow ", then it may be due a limitation elsewhere in the system.

Have a look at the system requirements of the application you are trying to run.

Maybe all three machines have the same problem (same virus, trojan or spyware).

Do they have a good install of drivers?

The processors may be doing their job, just waiting for the information/data to get to them (or cannot get the processed data out).

The application/software itself may be "buggy "

Unless you are trying to run something that was too big for those machines, I doubt you would call them slow.

OK, I understand now. The bus speed is less that the processor speed and the memory speed so the data going back and forth are the reason that computers seem slow. Thanks for the heads up. I am a confirmed AMD user I have about 7 of them up and running in the family. The P4 2.8 is my Sony laptop that I use for GPS.
