I bought a Pentium 4 class motherboard from my uncle, but it came with no manual. I am almost possitive I have found the right one on the internt, and it says I need the P4 Williamette or Northwood. the socket on the board says "mPGA478 ", and the model of the board is "P4B-MX" and it came from HP. All the specs, and pictures from this HP site match up, so i believe its the right board manual. Also, the motherboard has no black thing around the processor socket, but it does have 4 ***** holes. My uncle said he got this board from a freind for free, and he sold it to me for $20, as is. No manuals, no CD's, and, apparently a mising part. How hard is it to replace that piece?

    Hi Aku...

Download and install Everest Home Edition . It will supply the info you require.

After Everest starts click on "Motherboard" on the left-hand column. In the right-hand window you will see "CPU ". Click on it to see your CPU information. Mine tells me I have a Northwood.

    Update

*UPDATE* I just discovered my motherboard is an HP, based on the ASUS P4B-MX. I found the manual for it. YAY!!!! Now, to read it... ahh, I know how to read. I think...well, I also found out my board is MicroATX. can i use a regular ATX case? and why is my processor socket so small? I'm confused. Maybe I shouldn't be building my own PC from scratch...

PS: The I mentioned missing is the "Retention Module Base ", according to the manual. Can i order this from somewhere??

    Swearing again Aku! :D
It's alright we know what you wrote. :)

I'm not sure of the part. But I suspect it's part of the mount for CPU/heatsink, so will be very critical if that's what it is? I would take the board (in a static bag) to a few PC service shops in you area and ask if they have that bit. Should be common as it will probably be the same for all P4 478 chips and cost little or nothing for them to give you one from an old/faulty board.

how bout this.. scr3w? or this scr3\/\/...anyway. Like I said, its the CPU Retention Module, and I am goning to call a fwe places. A freind of mine knows someone that builds custom PC's @ his LAN Center, so he can probably find a Retention thingamajig. Well, now that i have my trusty manualy, and i've skimmed through it, i just need to get the CD from ASUS. I can get the drivers as ZIP files, but im not sure if they are bootable.

Back to my question...Which processor can I use with this motherboard? I am rather confused by all the choices. Also, If I buy an OEM Processor, where can I find a list of Intels approved heatsinks/fans? I looked on their site, and couldnt find anything.

    Aku,

Have a good look at the HP site about a "recovery" disk for your board/model. I think you might have to purchase one from HP to get the motherboard drivers.

I don't think you could make the system work without it.

Do a lot of research before you spend any big $s. (eg. Does it come with a guarantee that it actually works.)
