I just bought a new Dell Vostro 420 a couple of months ago (I've had great luck with Dell). The computer came with Vista Business SP1, but I opted for the XP Pro SP3 install and Dell installed it on the computer.

Anyway, I just recieved the Windows 7 Professional disk yesterday from Dell for my computer. I am happy with XP Pro, should I upgrade? If so why?

My favorite thought of the month:

"When you can list ten reasons why Windows 7 will improve your day to day life - then you'll be ready to upgrade."

If you're in the IT business and looking for work - then maybe adding the ability to work well with Win 7 might help;)

Also - you basically can't upgrade from XP to 7...You have to do a custom/full clean install and will have to re-install all of your applications.

    Hey Ranger!

The main reason I switched to W7 was that most of the new residential computers that are going to start to filter through work for repair will be W7.

Having said that it's a brilliant OS and I have not experienced a problem yet with it!

The school district I work for (I'm a High School Math Teacher), does not plan to upgrade from XP for a couple more years. The tech guys are taking a wait and see approach with Windows 7.

However, I will be testing for my Computer Apps certification this summer. If I teach a computer apps class, I need to be as familiar as possible with the latest software. That includes Windows 7. Reading about Windows 7 is not the same as using it.

I thank both of you for responding.

I only needed two: stability and performance. Vista crashed all the time, endless driver problems, and the recovery was a root canal. When it was running to perfection, the best score I got at pcpitstop was top 10% of laptops. Installed Win 7, have not had a single problem, and the same computer scores in the top 4% of laptops. There are some annoying things about Win 7-no calendar, no email, but one little tricky feature makes up for it. In the lower right corner of the toolbar is a tiny white flag. When you have any kind of problem, it turns yellow or red. Click on it, and it not only tells you the problem, but how to fix it.

Happened twice to me, and the fix worked in about three seconds.

    I'm sold.

The main reason I'm using Windows 7 is that all I've ever had was laptops, and as you get older, a 14 inch screen doesn't cut it anymore. That being said, Windows 7 so far is the best that I've used. It's not a memory hog and it's fast. And best of all, I can look at news clips and videos without it stopping and breaking up. And the sound is brilliant.
