I currently have an ATI FireGL video card with 256MB of video RAM in my laptop, but I'm looking to upgrade to a Core Duo laptop. If I get one with a graphics card with only 64MB or 128MB, how will that affect my display and overall graphics performance? How big a deal is the fact that I will lose at least 128MB of video RAM??? In what way will I notice it?

    Thanks everyone! :)

Please post your questions in the appropriate forum. This is a hardware question, not a Windows XP question. I have moved your question the the Hardware forum.

You won't have much choice in terms of video on a laptop as the chip is embedded on the board and obviuosly cannot be changed.

For general use you will not notice the difference between 64 MB and 256 MB, BUT if you are a gamer then clearly the more video RAM the better and you should be looking for a laptop with as much video ram as possible - 256 Mb preferred. My HP Centrino Duo powered laptop has 128 Mb RAM on an Intel Express chipset and is just dandy, I don't game, but I use the laptop for Photoshop demos - no problems there.

A point to bear in mind is that the video ram is often 'taken' from the main RAM in the laptop and you may look to increase that - I have 1 Gb on board - .99 Gb once the video memory has been deducted.

A second point is Vista - the display features vary depending on the amount of video ram ....

AFAIK you need at least 128 Mb video RAM for Aero

64MB will do for Aero. At the moment I have 128MB, althogh I'm waiting for a replacement board from Dell (since I ordered 256MB).

    I'll suggest 256MB for Vista.
