I have some concerns about the pass word safety and windows encryption using XP Pro.

I have some high value assets on the drive which I have endeavored to protect by setting up my administrator’s account with a user’s password and enabling encryption.

I have also created a password reset key which I have stored in a secure location.

I have observed a locked post entitled Retrieving a Password

which implies that winnows’ pass words from user accounts can be hacked.

I have on board and some experience with a container encryption program title TruCrypt which supports the use of Key files as well as the use of a password.

My question is if you wanted to protect high value assets on your drive which encryption program would you use and what additional security measures would you take?

    Hi Coleman,

I want to start by apologizing, because this post will not answer the question you asked. ;)

If my hard drive had what I considered high value assets that I was concerned about protecting, those assets would reside on a drive that made it's home, while in use, in a removable drive bay on my computer. When not in use, it's home would be in my locked, fireproof safe which resides in concrete. Seriously.

That’s what I was afraid of.

For the record the assets are 10 years of Quicken and other financial transactions.

They are high value to me and would be useful for ID theft.

Any body have any suggestions regarding which encryption and safety procedures are the best?

Not trying to stray from the topic of encryption, but ...........

I would like to point out that encryption will not protect your assets from fire, flood, tornado or lightening strike. A fireproof, liquid tight safe set in concrete stands a good chance of it. For the record, a removable drive tray can be installed quickly and easily (compared to a safe, really quick and really easy :p ) with usually nothing more than a phillips skroo-driver. They are inexpensive and fit in a 5.25 drive slot (same as a cd drive). You can place your current hard drive in it, and remove/install the drive in about as much time as it would take to type your password.

Available here and I'm sure other places as well.

Another simple alternative ..... a USB external hard drive.

Thanks. I have the ability to boot encrypted data up to a Yahoo Brief case.
I also have an external HD which I backup c with using EMC Retrospect 7.5 Professional back up software using AES 256.

I am really interested in encryption and other safety precautions.
