Hi DPI Graphics, In W10 > Start > Settings > Update and Security > Advanced Options > ?
If you have W10 Home - you will not be able to alter anything.
Right click Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features > Click on Java > Uninstall (upper left). Neil.

OK I know how to uninstall it, but I was wanting to know what will happen if I do.
Is it going to stop something from running? I know I don't use it in any of my aps.

Not had Java installed for several years running 8, 8.1 and now 10 and not had any issues. It's a gaping security hole as I understand it - the odd website may use it, but you will be advised if Java is not installed.

Windows Update is located under Settings > Update & security. But from what I see there is no option to update when shutting down but you can change the update time. By default, any updates that require a reboot are typically scheduled for 3:30am. But you can change that time, or simply reboot when you want manually.

As for Java, the vast majority of users and programs don't need it any more. The last hold-out I had was the game Minecraft that I had on my notebook for when my grandson came over, but even that has been updated to not use it. As PeteC noted, Java has, for years, continually been plagued with many many security issues that was a problem in itself, but also because many were not quickly fixed.

Another big problem with Java is the Java Updater frequently failed to remove old, insecure versions of the program that could be exploited by badguys. It has been so bad that the US Department of Homeland Security Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) has yet to rescind their January 2013 bulletin and still recommends users disable Java in browsers.

I say, forget disabling it and strongly agree with Pete and Neil to just uninstall it! But in addition to the uninstall instructions provided by Neil, I recommend you run JavaRA to remove all traces of previous versions that may have been left behind too.

It will NOT break Windows. The most that will happen is your program will toss up an error saying you need to install Java. If that happens, I recommend you check your program's website for a new version that does not require Java, or find an alternative program that does not require it.

Thank you PeteC & Bill. It will be gone today. I had an ap that said I should update it & I did. After that, I ended up with AdChoices, which I have been trying to get rid of for 2 weeks now. So. . . Byby Java & the ap that said I should update it.

What the heck is going on with Java developers?

Seems like they could do a better job with uninstalling their older versions.

I need Java to convert .ofx files, so I'll have to stay vigilant for the time being.

Actually, the program converts .csv files to .ofx format. I'll check, but I doubt there is one available that I can customize.

OK guys, I'm going to close this topic out now. I couldn't find any need for it so I got rid of Java. Thanks
