Well I learned too late in renaming the reg back up cabs, the good boot ups got replaced by the mess ups. Wished I had known to back them up.

I think this is my problem, if you view the images here http://www.cyn.us/systemproperties.htm , you'll see the reference in the virtual memory section of system properties- where is the a & b drive determined. I did a search for file with contents of "B:\, but quite a few files came up. User.dat for 1. Am I going to have to re-install windows? If so it's going to be tricky whith out A:\ drive (it's broke) to install cd rom support.

Can I create a batch file with the emergency startup info, if so, how? Just start out with cd\, return, then, each command on each line = followed by a return?

I think if I can get the virtual memory back to c:\ drive rather than windows is configured somewhere to select A:\ & B:\ Thanks, Cyn

    Hi Cyn,
You seem to be able to get to Control Panel/System/Performance/
    Virtual Memory,
so try setting "Let Windows manage my Virtual Memory "
    - and reboot.
    regards

Actually, that was Window's pick not mine. I did find out that the memory is bad, so could windows desperately seeking other resources? Don't know, except it dawned on me to switch memory between laptops and got the same errors on this one, and the other laptop worked ok.

Thanks for trying to help, once I can replace the memory, I'm on hold with that one, Cyn

What you're seeing there isn't an indicator of what drive windows is using for virtual memory. It's simply telling you that those two drives controllers are for some reason or another using dos drivers instead of windows protected mode-drivers. To see what drive windows is using for virtual memory (or to change it), click on the virtual memory button. Aside from this does windows run ok? Do the A & B drives work? What kind of drives are they (floppy, LS120, zip)? To fix this try clicking on one of the lines in the window (drive B is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system) and then click on the details button. It's been a while, but I believe you'll be given a somewhat vague explanation and there will be a link to click on to go through a troubleshooter. You might also want to have a look at this web page for some things to try.

Well it will if the memory from this machine is installed in it, but there are a lot of things messed up trying to recover, not knowing what the problem was. For one the display driver.

I think my daughters cat fried the memory by sleeping and walking around on the keyboard. It's not been the same since. The fact I'll have to spend more money for memory, it's on hold right now, cyn
