Can anyone tell me where, on my computer, is the file that has the latest Norton Antivirus (LiveUpdate) definitions that have been downloaded? I have NAV 2000 and am running Win98SE. I know in earlier versions there was a file that contained the most recent defintions but I can't find it now. Also, I want to be able to just do the LiveUpdate on one computer and then "network" the changes to other computers. Do-able?

Just be aware that when you just "copy" the files, any related Norton registry entries are not going to be updated. The Intelligent Updater Service, as I understand it, is an EXE install file that you can copy to each machine and then subsequently install it.

Thanks, WhitPhil - after checking out the Intelligent Updater I found that IT was exactly what I needed. You were right. Just copying the definitions from my computer to my wife's didn't do the job. But, after downloading and running the free I-U program from your link, it did. Thanks again. :)

I have just a question or two about the Intelligent Updater ?

Does it maintain updates for ALL Norton products other than the AV deffinitions.

Live update keeps all Norton Software updated. I mean Norton Utilities, Internet Security, NAV programs themselves.

I myself use LiveUpdate DAILY on this machine and as soon as they are turned on for the other two.

From my quick read on the service, it appears to handle only virus defs and is meant for anyone in a corporate-like environment who must update multiple pcs.

From using it, it appears it only updates the virus defintions. To get the rest of the updates I believe you have to have a "current" install of the product. The I-U is free and doesn't look on your comouter to see how long you've had your NAV installed like LiveUpdate.

    Thanks for the info.

I guess I will stick with Liveupdate.

BB - that may not be what you really want to do. OK for program changes but not so OK for AV def files. Take a look at what Symantec says about their "Live Update" vs. "Intelligent Updater" . Bottom line is that very often Live Update will give you files nearly a week old.

When I get home tonight I'll post a link to their page for the very latest def files.

    Thank you Newt.

I will sure check things out.

I just went to the link that you posted, have it printed and sure will read.

It appears that it may be in my best interst to check out some possible changes.

    Question.

Will the I U work with all three versions of NAV that I have ?

the simple fact is that you can run liveupdate and it will say you are current. then immediately go to intelligent updater and there are defs there for you to download and install.

i know, i see it happen that way day after day.

i still check with liveupdate each day for all program updates, but the virus defs are much more frequently available via intelligent updater.

it is for this reason that i do not much care for the automatic updating feature... it only retreives defs when they are available thru liveupdate.

on the average, i would say intelligent updater has new defs on a daily basis whereas liveupdate has them weekly.

anyone can confirm this on their own.

    :)
