    To the staff:

I have always been the PC troubleshooter for my friends and family, mostly because I simply knew how to operate the machine and they couldn't. However, it's painfully clear that I'm a round failure in IT (so far) and my casual interest/hobbyist tendencies will not serve me in the field.

To that end, I am taking A+ prep classes at a local college, which I'm also told will end up as equally useless. (And, I'm told it's not prepping me for the test - one of my friends who just took the exam reported.) Next semester promises better, since I have a server '03 class lined up.

That's not soon enough to improve my skills, especially considering the nature of my job. I need a library to build my skills from quickly. A reservoir of knowledge from which I can not only drink deeply, but keg stand and chug harder than your average Belushi. Where do I start?

Decide on ONE area of computing and research it thoroughly via Google or other search engine. Read all you can, apply what you read to your own or a test computer. Then move on to a second area., etc. etc.

You can even copy+paste the key principles in a txt file and save for future reference. For example, create a few txt files named:
    networking-data.txt
    registry-data.txt
    browsers.txt
    common-issues.txt

Add to each as neccessary the key data that YOU think would be good to have for future reference.

Eventually you will stop using the txt references because you will either remember what to do or you will have bookmarked the key sites. (let others store the data for you!
