Where did the 7 come from?

    OK there was :

    Windows 1
    Windows 2
    Windows 3.11
    Windows 95
    Windows 98
    Windows 98 SE
    Windows ME (ARRGGH!)
    Windows 2000
    Windows NT
    Windows XP
    Windows Vista

    And now Windows 7. Supposably this is the 7th release of Windows but the above don't add up to 6.

    Perhaps they are wanting to forget about versions like "ME" as if it was just a bad dream.

    Where they coming up with 7?

    Microsoft says that Windows 7 is the "seventh" major Windows version, which it isn't, but he, whatever they say...

    Your list isn't complete, here's a larger one:

    7. Windows 98 (and 98 Second Edition)
    8. Windows ME
    9. Windows 2000
    10. Windows XP (and Windows XP 64-bit edittion)
    11. Windows Server 2003
    12. Windows Mobile 6 (and 6.1)
    13. Windows Embedded CE 6.0
    14. Windows Vista
    15. Windows Home Server
    16. Windows Server 2008

    The way I understand it, they count it like this:
    1) Windows 3.0
    2) Windows 95 (and 95 OSR2, OSR2.1, OSR2.5)
    3) Windows 98 (and 98 Second Edition)
    4) Windows 2000
    5) Windows XP (and Windows XP 64-bit edittion)
    6) Windows Vista

    Because these are the "major" OS's that we widely adopted. (And no one really counts Windows ME -- http://xkcd.com/323/
