Post sp3. I would like to have these downloaded for when I reformat. Is there anywhere to get them?

Windows Update > Use administrator options (left hand pane) > Windows Update Catalogue > Install ActiveX if requested > Type in 'Windows XP' in Search Box - Good Luck :)

I think you will find it far easier and less time consuming to simply connect to Windows Update after reformatting.

If your install CD does not include SP3 (or SP2) I suggest you slipstream these into your installation CD - unless it is OEM in which case you cannot.

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Create Bootable CD

I have a OEM and I was wondering if there is a way to put the updates on a disk and when run would install like the sp2 and sp3 disks? Make my own SP disk so to speak.

Not that I am aware of, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a way .....

If you download the individual updates from MS Download each is an executable file which must be run individually - you need to accept a licence agreement in most cases with individual updates installed from a download, unlike Windows Update.

Unless you have a problem with internet speed or download limits I would continue to suggest using Windows Update - determining which of the updates on offer in the Windows Update Catalogue are appropriate to your install of XP is no easy task.

Using the list of updates shown in Add/Remove Programs is not a complete guide as only those updates which can be uninstalled are listed there. There are many which cannot be uninstalled and therefore are not listed.

In addition to Pete's comments on "the list of updates shown in Add/Remove Programs ", if you go by that list, you will install updates that have been replaced or superseeded by more recent ones.

I have nothing better to do than take notes when I install updates ... ... but it makes it easier to do what you're about to do. I download the updates and install from the hard disk and save the updates "for later ". I weed out the ones that have been replaced or superseeded which leaves me with this post SP3 list, as of december 2009, in the order of release date (I think):

    KB898461, KB951066, KB952287, KB946648, KB950762, KB951376, KB951978, KB951748, KB952954, KB950974, KB956803, KB954459, KB955069, KB958644, KB956802, KB957097, KB952069, KB952004, KB960225, KB958687, KB960803, KB967715, KB956572, KB959426, KB923561, KB970238, KB961501, KB971633, KB954155, KB971557, KB971657, KB961371, KB968816, KB956744, KB956844, KB960859, KB968389, KB973354, KB973540, KB969059, KB973507, KB973869, KB973687, KB971486, KB973815, KB958869, KB969947, KB971961, KB971737, KB974112, KB975025, KB974571, KB973525, KB975467, KB974318, KB974392, KB976749, KB970430, KB976098, KB976325, KB955759, KB973904

Those are for XP Professional but should be the same for XP Home. The list doesn't include updates for any additional software from Microsoft (such as .NET Framework).

Enjoy your hours of downloading ... :p ... making sure that you choose the correct file version!

I looked in the Windows folder and saw the update uninstalls. I then went to MS Download and downloaded them and put them on disk (yeah) so hopefully I now have a full backup of updates.

Until more come out. Thanks for the info guys. :)

I guess you're as close to a full set of updates as you can be bearing in mind my comment above .....
Those shown in Windows are of course the same as those shown in Addd/Remove.

Pete, is there a way to find out which uninstallable updates are installed?

    Possibly .....

Log onto Windows/Microsoft Update and in the left hand pane under Options - Review your update history.

Comparing that list with the list in Windows or Add/Remove Programs may throw them up. I have not made the comparision so will be interested to hear how you make out :)

See if you can shed some light on this: My update history currently shows 23 updates, 4 of which show as having a problem with the install. I reinstalled the updates and restarted the computer. Checked with WU again and results were the same.

I have 76 updates listed in the Windows folder which are uninstallable.

    Add/Remove shows 69 updates.

How can I get these 4 updates to install that WU says I had problems installing?

Download them from MS Downloads, save to hard drive and try installing from there.

Way ahead of you. That "s where I get all my updates from. They( the problem updates ) go through the process of installing but don't give any indication that the install failed. I didn't know they had until I saw the updates had failed at WU.

You should start a new thread on this - it is somewhat removed from your original query - and post the updates which have failed.
