My folks have been experiencing various computer problems, including getting "knocked off the internet." They have Norton Antivirus on their computer, but the subscription is likely expired. I also have NAV with update defs. What I'd like to do is copy my defs to a CD, install them to their computer & run virus scan before I do any other troubleshooting. The one problem (I'm more a hardware guy) is I'm not sure where Norton stores these & what they look like. We're using XP and I think they are the .dat files sprinkled in various Symantec folders but not real sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Christer,
thanks. Problem tho - one of their big complaints is they are disconnected from the internet every couple minutes, so the online scan is problematic. That's why I want to dump Norton's defs into the proper location & run a scan before anything else. Once I'm assured there's mo virus/trojan on their box then I can continue with normal troubleshooting.

If they're getting 'knocked off' by the RPC service, it's probably the blaster worm. You can work around it by looking for msblast.exe in the task manager and end task it. Then go to start>run and type services.msc. In the list locate Remote Procedure Call and right click>properties. On recovery tab, reset failure options to 'restart the service'. Then visit Windows update for the patch and symantec for removal tool/instructions.
