I just want to schlep files from one location to another. 5-10gb would be perfect. I've googled and froogled and can find plenty of drives that are around $1 per gb, such as 60, 80, 130, and 160gb. Why doesn't this ratio apply to the lower end of the spectrum? The only drives in the 5-10gb range are all way, way overpriced because they're mini/pocket/keyring/pen-sized. I don't need it to be small; the big bulky 5.25" would be just fine, but above all it should be cheap, cheap, cheap.

I've searched for clearance, close-out, overstock, refurbished, etc. These drives must exist somewhere. Where else should I look?

Small drives are pretty much unavailable now. Probably not price effective to provide them anymore. Small drives would be usefull for many. But we are all brainwashed into purchasing a drive that is so big, most of us will never fill it up, unless we are into video editing or a game freak with many (dozens/hundreds) of large games installed.

Only suggestion is to buy a second hand "old" drive. Problem is, it will be slower than the larger ones and only USB1.1. Probably the smallest ATA100 secondhand drive will be around 10GB. Most drives under that will be ATA33 and just maybe ATA66? Not sure about older USB drives.

DVD-R/RW isn't a bad medium for storage as an alternative. Even CD-R/RW is still usefull.

Sign of the times I'm afraid.
