It may help and won't do any harm, try reinstalling Windows Installer from here.

What version of word and what is your OS and what is your box???

***Assuming this is Office 03 and 07 running on Vista or XP
Do you have multiple versions of Office installed?
If so, this is a know issue when going back and forth from one version to the other and back again.
There is a Microsoft KB article on that topic.

***Assuming this is Office 03 or 07 running on Vista on an OEM box
If you only have one version of Office installed, this too may be a know issue, but not well documented as the direct cause has not yet been identified.
What is causing it, in some cases I have worked, is a loss of administration permission over the registry.
This is common on OEM Vista machines, but I have yet to see it happen on a Retail install of Vista on a custom built box.
There has only been two ways I have fixed it.
The first is to try and run a Microsoft script called "subnacl ", I think that's it.
I'll look it up if you think you want to try it.
This routine checks all the regestry keys and forces admin permission back on them.
    one at a time.
If it works, you can tell right away.
The down side is that if it does not work, it exposes just how badly the registry has been jacked up, and a LOT of other formerly hidden issues can get exposed, leaving the own with little option but to flatten the hard drive and start from scratch.

***Assuming this is Office 07 running on Vista
There is ONE other long shot.
I have actually seen this happen on one circumstance where a user had IE open at the time of the office install.
I solved that one by uninstalling Office, running a repair and full update of Windows (which fixes IE and installes the updated Windows installer), and then reinstalling Office making sure IE was not open at the time.
(I know that sounds odd, but it worked).

    Hi Bilb0,

The OP double posted and at least one was in the XP board so I assumed the OS was XP, however your point above if XP is valid, and if Vista I'm sure the other points you made are valid too.
