When the "enable Office plug-in" choice under Options, Miscellaneous has been un-checked--

how can you make sure that the attachments received in Outlook are scanned for viruses ??

In addition, there was a Symantec forum :
    www.Symantec.com/techsupp/consumer
    but this link is dis-abled.

Does anyone know of an active Symantec forum?

Sorry you have gotten no reply here, Judy. I was hoping someone more familiar with Outlook would see and respond. I have Outlook 2000 installed and have opened it a few times  , but I'm unable to find the miscellaneous section under options you refer to, to even begin researching an answer for you. What version of Outlook are you using?

I'm unaware of there ever being a tech support forum at Symantec, but there is technical support.

    Hi Judy!

Since You mention "Symantec Forum ", I assume that You are using Norton Anti Virus and refer to the "Office Plugin" in NAV.

I'm not 100% sure, only 99% but I believe the "Office Plugin" is for documents opened in Word, Excel and the other Office Applications and that Microsoft Outlook is covered as an e-mail client by NAV as any other e-mail client like Outlook Express or Thunderbird.

I have heard/read that the extra layer of protection that is provided by the "Office Plugin" isn't necessary since files are scanned when downloaded to the computer. On slower computers, on which the Norton stuff reduce performance too much, I have heard/read recommendations to disable the "Office Plugin" to speed up the Office Applications.

I hope someone can confirm this,
    Christer

Thanks for all your help, and I think the question has been answered...

I am using Outlook XP and Norton AV 2004.

In Norton, you go to Options, then Miscellaneous where there is a check box to enable the office plug-in. If you do not check the enable office plug-in box, then Norton does not scan your word documents when you are working in the MS Word program. And, yes, if you don't check the box it does speed up your work.

And, yes, the office plug-in is not necessary since, when you start to open and attachment in Outlook, the NAV scans the document in the background and when it is finally opened, it has been scanned. ( this is done without your knowledge )

So, your attachments are being scanned if the plug-in is not checked.
