I click on a .wma, .mp3, .avi file....and when Windows Media Player 10 opens up, it automatically disappears. It's only on the screen for a second. After checking the processes, WMP is not in the process list.

Any media file that I click on it does the same thing. My computer is very powerful, 1 GB RAM, WinXP Pro. It just started doing this last night.

It worked before just fine. I had no problems playing any videos or music. Now, when I click on a file, it just pops up and then disappears.

What could be the cause and how can I fix this? I did a search but came up with nothing.

    Hi

what happens if you start media player, then open a file with it - rather than clicking on a file type associated with media player?

    best wishes, HJ

same thing. If I just click on WMP 10, it begins to render in and as soon as you see the blue box, it disappears. Nothing.

Still having the same problem. Just thought I would update this to keep it from falling too far back. If anyone has any info or advice besides reinstalling Windows, I'd like to know. This problem has me stumped for sure.

although I'm hoping you get a solution, regret it unlikely I will be much help as with W98 I cannot run WMP10... had an idea but you ruled it out by trying WMP by itself

at least you are BTT again, with luck someone good XP person will pick up...

    best wishes, HJ.

Take a look in your event viewer and see if there's anything in there that would give us a clue as to what's happening. Start>run>eventvwr.msc

    Have you tried system restore?

    Ok, Here is an update.

My brother was on my computer and he had told me that before I had gotten home, he had started up WMP and either from the Windows Firewall or the Grisoft AVG, a small window popped up and said that this might be malicious, do you wish to proceed. Well, I have always allowed it because I knew that it was only the Windows Media Player but my brother got a little worried and hit terminate. That message scared him a little bit.

So....I'm guessing that he has completely blocked Windows Media Player from running on my WinXP computer by terminating it right away....per the AVG or the Windows Firewall. That's why it would disappear as soon as it renders in.

How do I go back and allow it to continue? I looked at the AVG program but don't see where it would have terminated this program so my only other guess is that the Windows Firewall blocked it.

Have you tried turning the firewall off? That should eliminate the firewall. Also AVG can be done this way too. Disconnect from the Internet first.
