Had the same when I installed XP the first time and my Modem and Sound Card drivers had not been correctly installed.

Check to see if any conflicts are showing and take corrective action accordingly.

    Back to the original question

The WAN Miniport, IP, L2TP, PPPOE, and PPTP were all installed for VPN support. They are automatic when you install a NIC. It's just like in the Win9x, when you installed the DUN 1.3 update, you got all this extra stuff in the network control panel applet for VPN support. These items can be removed but I'd leave them becasue they're not causing any harm. That way if you ever need them, you won't have to go through the hassel of setting them back up.

Windows 2000 also has all these extra WAN Miniports, but in order to see them in Device Manager, you have to go up to View and click Show hidden devices.
