I need to replace a fried AMD Athlon XP and have found that I can use up to 2600. I found the 2400+ selling for around $80 but there are two core names, Thorton and Thoroughbred. I can't find which is the best.

Daddad - you're slipping. Too much shopping?

When I first saw the title of this thread, I thought hmmmm might get interesting. Then I read the question and felt, **** I really don't know squat about these thorntons, they are brand spanking new. Thunderbirds, Palaminos, Thoroughbreds and Bartons - yes. Thorntons - no.

Regardless, the thornton is not a thoroughbred.

And the good word (also, off topic) is that up and including week 39 production, all Barton's were unlocked. Some week 39-43 were unlocked and most post 43's are locked. As to their cores, I believe there have been 10 different steppings so far. Some OC better than others and, while some vendors identify the steppings, most others don't. I guess that still doesn't answer the question though does it? So what's an Applebred? hehehe ......

    ;)Edit
Open mouth insert foot - self inflicted. Just read your links Daddad - guess I'm the one thats been doing too much shopping. Great links - thanks.

I had to choose between a 2600+ Barton and a 2600+ T-bred to put on my Christmas list. After reading some reviews comparing the two and some personal testimonials, I decided to go with the T-Bred. Even with less cache, the T-Bred appears to outperform its equivalently-clocked Barton brothers.

All the 2600s supposedly overclock quite well - Barton or T-bred. Alot of newer mobos automatically unlock your cpu.

Thorton...as about as exciting as stale toast.
