    Domain

"A group of computers and devices on a network that are administered as a unit with common rules and procedures. Within the Internet, domains are defined by the IP address. All devices sharing a common part of the IP address are said to be in the same domain."

Do you need/want a domain using an expensive copy of Win2k Server or do you just need one of your machines to act as a server? Big difference.

Pick the XP machine that is going to die/transform.

Boot from the 2K server CD.

Opt to blow away the current contents and reformat.

Do the install and the option to make the PC a domain controller will be part of the install selections.

When you can, add a user account for yourself that will be your domain admin account. Note that there is no local logon with a domain controller. You simply don't have the option in normal operations.

After the DC is set up and running, go to each remain XP PC and change them from workgroup to domain. You will be asked for an account that has rights to do the deed and you will use the one you set up when building the DC.
