I cannot find out how to use the DOS prompt as I know absolutely nothing about DOS. Does anyone know what version of DOS is on the prompt. I checked properties but it does not give the version.
Unfortunately I cannot find out how to use the Symantec rescue disks because they just refer me to documents that are of no use to me because they are too technical and assume that you know DOS, which I do not!
I expect that I would have to buy a DOS book just to find out how to use the disks, but I don't know what version of DOS it is. I didn't even know that it came in several versions.

Symantec is of no help at all, unless you are a computer professional...they have very poor tech support!!

    TIA.....

    Thank you very much!

I assume that DOS is pretty much obsolete, so why
Symantec uses it for its rescue disks, I have no idea. Because it uses DOS, the startup disk and the rescue disks are of no use at all to me as I know nothing about DOS.
I don't even know where it is on this computer and according to Microsoft, Windows ME does not have DOS in the first place. It just has something called a DOS prompt, whatever that is.

So, I just wasted 8 floppy disks, which I had to throw away, and lost the price of the NAV2003 CD, which I also threw out...Now I am looking for new virus software...

Oh well, live and learn, I guess.
    Thanks for your response....

You shouldn't have to know anything about dos in order to use the rescue disks. Did you try booting from the rescue disks? Put the first disk in your floppy drive and reboot. When it's finished booting from the floppy you'll be presented a menu. From there it's just like any other program except it's running from the floppy instead of your hard disk. They do this because some viruses can cause your computer to not boot to windows in which case your Norton windows program would be of no use to you. Thus the term "rescue disks ". If you figure this out and decide to keep it, be sure to update the disks whenever you update your virus definitions. The dos virus scanner requires them just as the one in windows does.

Zander--Good Grief!! We should make new rescue disks each time we update NAV virus definitions??
Since there are new definitions about five days a week lately, we'll be spending a major part of our lives updating the definitions and then the rescue disks!!

Thank you for your response, Zander...

I didn't try to do anything with them....I could get no answer from tech support about how to use them except a referral to some doc that wanted me to make the disks on another computer and use them on this one. That made no sense at all as I had already made the disks on this computer. They must think everyone has extra computers hanging around the house!

I didn't dare try to boot with the disk as I was afraid I would not ever get back into Windows.
Should I just boot with the disk and do nothing with the other 7? I do not have a virus but was just trying to check the disks as was recommended after I made them.

Believe it or not you will not hurt a thing using those floppies.
All you would be able to do with them is to run a antivirus check!

You would boot to the first floppy and it would ask for the 2nd which when it is done will ask for the 3rd, etc, etc, until all is finished.

The tech gave the standard information as they misunderstood you, as most people refuse to make those floppies until it is time to scream help then they ask.
WinMe does have a little dos in it. You just have to know what is there.

Welshjim Sad, but true. To true in fact. And we both know it is because of lazy folks that there are so many virus flying through the internet.

Yeah (sort of) . :) You boot with the first one and then depending on what you select in the menu you may or may not have to use the others. There's no need for you to know when it needs them. If it needs one or more of the other disks it will prompt you for them. No need to worry about whether or not you'll get back into windows after you're done either. Simply remove the floppy disk from the drive and ctrl-alt-delete to restart the computer. Reset button will work fine also. ;)

The message by Welshjim is a point that should be taken into consideration.

We * SHOULD * make new Rescue Disk every time we update the Anti-Virus. Otherwies they will be useless if need to do a DOS check for A Virus.

You can use the same disks. And every once in awhile you may have to add another floppy. I started with 5 and wound up with seven before I quite using Norton.

You don't have to throw away any floppies. You can overwrite them if you don't want what's on them.
