I know my mobo takes Pc2700 memory in dual channel mode. there are 3 slots for memory.
I'm interested in upgrading my 2x512 modules to at least 2x1gb.

if i bought 1x1gb and added it to my current 2x512 would that give me 2gb with the 2x512 working in dual channel mode?
if i bought 2x1gb modules would it HAVE to be pc2700?? If i bought pc3200 would it simply run a bit slower but work fine or would it cause problems on my board?

    many thanks
    David

David, there should be 4 slots if memory has to work in dual channel mode.

Yes & No. Your 512 MB would be running in dual channel, but 1 GB would be running in single channel mode. Check your mobo docs to see if this is supported or not.

You can buy PC3200 RAM. It would be downgraded to PC2700 & would run at slower speed.

A lot of dual channel boards have 3 memory slots but only two of the three can be used for dual channel.

edit for clarification: If you have 3 slots and again, many dual channel boards have 3 slots, you can run 3 sticks of memory but you will lose dual channel functionality. If anyone can figure out how to run 4 sticks with three slots, they're on their way to an exciting new career.

To see what memory options exist for your motherboard log onto www.crucial.com and work through their memory selector.

If you want to run dual channel it is best to buy a kit of two matched sticks.

    Thanks guys.
    The board has 3 slots.
It looks like I'd be better buying 2 x 1gb modules and running them in dual channel mode rather than add 1 gb and run the whole lot in single channel mode.

    thanks again
