Does anyone know what the following file does: xjdihzqf.exe

It lives in the system 32 folder, and I noticed it when my machine boots up. Once the desktop is up, a DOS looking window pops up just quick enough to notice, and then goes away. My guess is that this is some type of spyware. Any idea how to get rid of it?

Almost certainly a piece of sypware or a virus.

What sypware removers/blockers (including version number) are you running and have you updated them in the past week?

I am using adaware 6.0, spybot 1.2, and I just downloaded cw shredder 1.59.1. Each time I run them i check for new versions, but i rarely receive any newer version.

    Welcome to Windowsbbs gasmix :)

Download HijackThis.exe from here. Save it to a permanent folder (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT). Open and hit scan, then save log. Once it is saved it will open in notepad. Select all from the edit button, copy and paste the results here. Don't fix anything with it yet! Someone experienced with the logs will advise you.

BTW, there are newer versions of all three of those programs. Get CWShredder from the above link, Spybot and Ad-aware from my signature. Install and update.

You may want to print this out, or save it to text where you can access it in safe mode.

I am assuming you have downloaded, installed and updated Spybot, Ad-aware and CWShredder. You will need them later.

    Download and install RegSeeker.

Open add/remove programs and uninstall Twaintec, Clearsearch and Virtual bouncer if listed. Reboot.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following remaining entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}_ - (no file)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Right click My Computer and choose properties. On system restore tab, check the box to turn off. OK out.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to the Administrator account.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files.

    Open CWShredder and click fix.

Search for and delete any files and folders named virtual bouncer and pc powerscan.

Open C:\Program Files and delete the folders lycos and clearsearch if present.

Open C:\WINDOWS and delete the following files if present.

    biprep.exe
    cache371\b_371_0_1_585800.htm
    ft1_01_0_279_gepfah.exe
    mxtarget.dll
    smdat32a.sys
    smdat32m.sys
    twaintec.ini
    urls.bin
    vurls.bin
    wast2.exe
    wsem218.dll
    xgn.exe

Open C:\WINDOWS\system and delete the following files if present.

    csie.dll
    ie_clrsch.dll
    2_0_1browserhelper2.dll
    3_0_1browserhelper3.dll
    5_0_1browserhelper5.dll
    iesearchbar.dll
    mxtarget.dll
    twaintec.dll

Open C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the following files if present.

    xjdihzqf.exe
    csie.dll
    ie_clrsch.dll
    2_0_1browserhelper2.dll
    3_0_1browserhelper3.dll
    5_0_1browserhelper5.dll
    iesearchbar.dll
    mxtarget.dll
    twaintec.dll
    uduftm.exe

Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.

Run Spybot. Fix all it finds that is prechecked.

Run Ad-aware in full scan mode. Delete all it finds.

Open RegSeeker, maximize the window and click clean registry. When scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Repeat.

Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Back in windows, scan your PC with RAV. Check the box to autoclean. If any files are infected and uncleanable, click the report button then copy and paste it here, along with a new HijackThis log.

To make the file searching a whole lot faster, you may want to download and install Agent Ransack. Far superior to XP's search tool.

gasmix--Just to be sure you understood an earlier suggestion, there are new builds of AdAware and SpybotS&D--not just new reference files. You want to download the new builds directly from the Download pages of these programs. Auto Updates will not work.
If you need the URL's for the download pages

Don't know if this will help or not but the following thread contains a number of HiJack This log files that have the same file name in a number of different places - before the cleanup began.

Log looks clean. :) Everything working properly?
Delete the infected file, polall1m.exe, and empty the recycle bin. Reboot and turn System Restore back on.

Then I recommend you open Spybot and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it. Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install, enable all protection and update. Check for updates weekly.
    Then download and install IESpyad.

That will give you an added layer of protection against unwanted parasites.

BTW, I overlooked you putting HijackThis on your desktop, rather than in a permanent folder per my first suggestion, which means the backups were created on the desktop also. You don't need any of them. Open HijakThix and click config, then backups. Delete all. Then create a new folder and place HijackThis in it, in case you do again use it in the future. Should that need arise, be sure to check for updates before scanning.
