    Hi all,
When I leave my computer unattended for a while and I come back there is often that Dial-up connection window open and trying to connect to the Internet, but how do I find out what application is doing this.
I had a look at all running processes, but I can't find anything unusual.
    Thanks for any input!

Do you have Norton AV installed with LiveUpdate. LU is pesky for trying to dial home to update the virus definitions. Even tho' you uncheck the automatic update in options it will still try to dial home. :( If this might be the cause post back for some solutions.

Thanks for your reply John. I do Not have Norton AV, but I do have Norton Firewall. I have installed the AV only once on this computer to check for any virusses, but unstalled it after it didn't find any.
    Any other solutions?
    Thanks

    Hello theo,

In the Control Panel > Internet options > connections > is the Never dial a connection ticked?

Isolate all the apps, meaning enable them one by one to track it down that way.

I would suggest that you sweep your system with Spybot - Ad-Aware and MS Anti-Spyware. The symptoms sound like a dialer got on your system. http://www.windowsbbs.com/links.php links to Spybot and Ad-Aware under Security. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en&Hash=5BMW635 for MS-AS

I have installed the AV only once on this computer to check for any virusses, but unstalled it after it didn't find any.
Am I right to understand that you have no resident AV on your system? You should also use the on-line scanners.

    Regards - Charles

That does not mean that it is ALL gone. Norton products do a VERY POOR job of uninstalling.

I myself got one GREAT BIG surprise last evening when I ran the newest RegSeeker. It found at least eight (8) references to Norton products. I have not had any Norton installed on this machine in MONTHS. If not years.

    theo54nz,

Forgot to add that if you look at the permission/deny options of the firewall - don't run NPF if that's what it is, but should have that kind of option - deny/ permit one at time to see which app/process is the culprit.

    Regards - Charles
