I keep getting this icon on my desktop, I looked at the properties and this is what it says
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop
I delete it- but it keeps coming back.
what do I need to do to get rid of it ? or do I need it ?
    thanks for your help !
    have a great nite :)

Each time you edit your Address Book in Outlook Express, that ~ file will keep on coming back. It is your backup address book file, being put in the wrong place and with the wrong name.
It is a bug courtesy of M$, and a fix is coming, right about the time pigs fly [not like when Pink Floyd comes to town].
There are several threads on this problem, but you cannot use ~ by itself in a search to find them.
If your address book is fine, you can delete it.

    WHAT IS THIS

to answer your question literally, it is a Tilde ~ see top left key on keyboard
since you mean, why does it show up,what to do with it
    you have choices
Dump into recycle bin each time or
create a shortcut on desktop, it impresses newbies

********I posted about this on About.com/windows way back, shortly after i got this 'puter Jan 28, 2003 .no~one could give me a clue on that forum at that time**********

i like to use it instead of the dash - ......~ it is cuter~

as Markp62 noted "there are many posts discussing it , here and that other forum.if you have nothing else to do, you can read all that, but i just keep dumping into recycle bin
