I use WinXP home and woder if anyone knows what 'WinSxS' is? It's a sub-directory of 'Windows' and contains approx 64Gb of folders labelled

    x86_policy... and
    x86_Microsoft Windows...

What are they, why were they created and can I get rid of them?

    thanks
    Pete

My folder is only 11meg..Looks like part of MS updates or hotfixes. I'd leave em alone.

Are you sure your folder is 64gigs?

    mine is 13.1 MB

    WinSxS:
that dir is where windows stores side-by-side dlls.

    Side-by-side DLLs:
Permit multiple versions of the same DLL to exist side-by-side. The OS maintains the link between the application and the right DLL, so several DLLs can exist and multiple applications can share them.

Not unusual at all, it will grow as 3rd party software gets installed.
