Please help I don't know what to believe. I have recieved an e-mail saying that I have recieved a virius from them by mistake. I have no idea whom this person is. They say they are sorry and say that I am to find a file tagged "sulfnbk.exe on my C-drive and quickly put it in the recycle bin then empty the bin. I checked and I do have this file on my C-drive.
I then recieved another e-mail claiming that the first e-mail is a hoax. I don't know what to do. Is the file mentioned suspossed to be on my C-drive? They claim that the virius will lay dormant for 14 days the erase all my files. I am very worried. Thank you for any help that you can provide.

Hoax for sure. More info at the link above but in brief, the file is used to repair long file name problems. Standard M$ file and AFAIK has never been part of any viral problem.

This foolish hoax propogates so easily precisely because SULFNBK.EXE is extremely like to be on a Windows machine. It's part of Windows. However, 99.9% of the recipients of the hoax e-mail haven't the merest concept of what's inside their puters, and delete the file.

It is possible for this or any EXE file to be contaminated with a virus, but there's no record of this one carrying an invader, and little to no likelihood that it will be infected.

    THANKS!

Thank you all for your help. I can see how a hoax such as this can cause problems. Again, thank you all, you have saved me from a great deal of headaches and have taught me something about my computer.wagonmaker111

    Urban Legends and Folklore

This is my favorite site to visit when I get those 'WARNING! THIS VIRUS IS GOING AROUND!' e-mail. I always check it out before forwarding to anyone on my list. More often than not, I end up sending the sender this link and gently remind them to check it out FIRST before bothering everyone with a hoax. There are too many people out there with too much time on their hands. Just wish they would leave us 'good guys' alone. :)

Here is the link to Urban Legends and Folklore .

I hope a lot of people read this post so they can benefit from this link.

    :)
